Twister director Jan De Bont has been chatting about his thoughts the upcoming sequel to his film, Twisters.
Jan De Bont helmed one of the most iconic action films of the 1990s in Speed and it’s infamous sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control, not to mention his work as a cinematographer on the the likes of Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October.
Twister, released in 1996, was his second film as director and it has remained popular ever since, inspiring the brilliant Twister: Ride It Out at Universal Studios, which sadly closed in 2015.
Twisters is the upcoming sequel, which will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos. Lee Isaac Chung will direct from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith
In an interview with Inverse, De Bont was asked his opinion on the sequel. De Bont said that he has not been consulted about the film, going on to say “when things fell from the sky, there were real things falling from a helicopter,” he says. “If you film a car escaping a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice that came at us. It’s a movie that cannot be remade… That would never, ever happen again”.
De Bont did, however, praise Chung and expressed his admiration for his film Minari, saying that “It might be a really different approach. That’s the same with [Greta Gerwig] of Barbie. Nobody would ever have thought she’d direct that movie and make it so successful”.
De Bont also shared his thoughts on indie directors graduating to franchise films, expressing concern that “the main reason they’re finding younger, inexperienced people is they want to be able to fully control them. They want them to have really good ADs, writers, producers, cinematographers so that they have all the help they can get. But ultimately, the studio is going to tell them what’s in the movie. I know that firsthand.”
Twisters is currently in production, with arelease date of the 19th July 2024 though, as with all current film projects, the current strikes are likely to impact that.
