Netflix has dropped the first look at its upcoming animated fantasy, Spellbound. Here’s a colourful new trailer:

Last year, Netflix vowed to focus on quality over quantity, and Spellbound is its latest animated film. To remind us of this, the streaming behemoth has just released the first trailer for the Skydance Animation production.

Spellbound is directed by Vicky Jenson, best known for co-directing Shrek and Shark Tale. Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda are in charge of the script.

The film also has a ridiculously stacked cast. Rachel Zegler voices protagonist Ellian, who goes on a wild adventure to save her kingdom after her parents are turned into monsters. She’s joined by John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Tituss Burgess, Nathan Lane, Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman.

Curiously, the trailer doesn’t mention John Lasseter, the former Pixar director who left the company following allegations of sexual misconduct, but it does mention the projects he worked on. The trailer loudly proclaims to be “from the visionary behind Toy Story” before listing many of Lasseter’s other films. Lasseter has acted as the Head of Animation for Skydance Animation since 2019 and oversaw the production of Luck, which premiered on AppleTV+ in 2022. Emma Thompson was originally cast in Luck, but ended up quitting the project once Lasseter was brought on board.

Spellbound is set to debut on Netflix 22nd November.
