Alien: Romulus 2 | Fede Alverez wants to shoot film this year

Director Fede Alvarez has admitted that he’s looking to get his Alien: Romulus sequel movie fast – and we might see it in 2026.

The last time we heard from filmmaker Fede Alvarez, he was dead set on making a sequel to Alien: Romulus, but the timeline for such a project remained rather unclear. While talking about taking the sequel into “uncharted waters” for the franchise, Alvarez also mentioned that he’d only make the film if the idea was right, suggesting that things were yet to firm up in his mind as to which direction the sequel might take.

Then, there was the filmmaker’s reveal earlier this month that he was interested in making a slasher film, further muddying the timeline for an Alien sequel. Until today that is, as an interview with Collider reveals that not only will an Alien: Romulus sequel be Alvarez’s next film, but the filmmaker wants it to go before cameras this year.

Speaking to the outlet, Alvarez says of the sequel, he is already “writing it.” And, as for a timeline he reveals, “I think the sequel is my next movie.” When asked when that might go into production, Alvarez adds, “It’s a good question. I hope I can shoot it this year.”

While not a complete surprise – 20th Century Studios’ boss Steve Asbell confirmed some time ago that a sequel was in the works – the timeline is perhaps a little quicker than some expected. Should Alvarez’s plans come to fruition, that will be two Alien films in the space of three years. We’ve also got Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth show coming later this year, so we seem to be living in a fruitful moment for xenomorph fans.

Hawley’s show got an ace (and spoiler-free) teaser trailer last month which is well worth a watch, but looking ahead to Alvarez’s next film, it’s the thought of an Alien film freed from the series’ trappings that is perhaps most exciting.

Romulus was perhaps a little too eager too honour its predecessors, but Alavarez has stated that’s now out of his system. With the previous two films being prequels from Ridley Scott, the whole franchise has become centred on its own mythology over the last decade or so, so we’re looking forward to seeing things taken in fresh directions.
