Jack Quaid stars in Novocaine, which is arriving in cinemas this month. Here’s the final trailer for the film.

Jack Quaid has enjoyed a career surge in the last few years, powered by the success of Amazon’s satirical superhero series The Boys. The actor has retooled his performance as Hughie Campbell in the show into a series of fun variations on the ā€˜ordinary guy with a big heart’ in a number of movies, especially ones like Companion where he subverts that approach to add a more sinister edge to his character.

In Novocaine, though, it looks as though we’re going to see Quaid return to this everyman archetype, this time with a focus on action. Quaid plays Nathan Caine, a chap who, thanks to a rare disorder, can’t feel pain. Hey, that rhymes.

Sounds a bit like Robert Carlyle’s villain in the Bond film The World Is Not Enough, who couldn’t feel pain but 007 resorted to punching a lot all the same. But moving on.

Specific to Novocaine, by the looks of it we’re in for a feature-length runtime of seeing Quaid get horrendously injured while he simply stares at his latest maiming in a state of bemused detachment. It’s kind of like Buster Keaton for the John Wick generation.

Here’s the synopsis: ā€˜When the girl of his dreams is kidnapped, a man incapable of feeling physical pain turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her.’

Told you.

Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr, Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp, and Jacob Batalon co-star, with the film set to release in UK cinemas on the 28th March. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, directors of 2019’s Villains and 2022’s Significant Other (a surprisingly good little sci-fi thriller starring Maika Monroe), helm the film.
