The Inspector Lynley Mysteries are being adapted into a new television series for Britbox, Leo Suter will star.

A new adaptation of the mystery series Inspector Lynley, is now in the works for streaming service Britbox, and is reportedly called Lynley. Vikings: Valhalla star Leo Suter will play Lynley, alongside Ted Lasso star Sofia Barclay as Havers. The new version will tackle ā€œissues around personality, gender and classā€.

Sherlock writer Steve Thompson penned the series, with Ed Bazalgette directing. George will be an executive producer. Deals have not been finalized but it looks as though the show will be acquired by the BBC in the UK.

According to Deadline, production on the four 90-minute episodes will begin in Ireland soon, and the series will premiere in 2025.

Inspector Lynley began life as a series of novels by Elizabeth George. It followed Thomas ā€˜Tommyā€™ Lynley, 8th Earl of Ashton, an upper class, well educated peer of the realm who is assigned to Scotland Yard and is soon paired up with Barbara Havers, a working class detective. Despite their differences, they soon develop a mutual respect. They dealt with various crimes including murder, missing persons and kidnapping.

The books were adapted into BBC drama The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which ran from 2001 to 2008. Nathanial Parker starred as the titular character, alongside Sharon Small as Havers. The cast also included Lesley Vickerage as Helen Clyde, later Lynley, who was replaced by Catherine Russell in series 5, Paul Hickey as forensic pathologist Lafferty and Shaun Parkes as Detective Constable Winston Nkata. Despite protestations from fans, the show came to an end after six series.

George continues to write Lynley novels, the latest, Something To Hide, was published in 2022.

The two part pilot episode and all six series of the original Inspector Lynley Mysteries are available to watch free of charge on BBC iPlayer.
