Our weekly movie podcast recommendation this time looks at a production flying the flag for the less-liked films in the world.
Sometimes you have the best intentions when watching a universally derided film. Despite your best efforts though, it’s a slog. Have you ever watched a particular movie that feels like you might as well be flogging a dead horse? The FilmFloggers team certainly have.
Tom, Ben and Fiona are that team behind FilmFloggers. They flog, so you don’t have to. What’s more impressive is they really started as they meant to go on, with Battlefield Earth of all things.
FilmFloggers, as a concept, first came about in 2018 but Ben and Tom, who met at university, struggled to get it going. Fast-forward to 2020 and Ben and his partner Fiona were travelling when – you’ve guessed it – Coronavirus happened. Their plan to travel the world in 365 days was curtailed in favour of a return to the UK, when they started FilmFloggers in September 2020.
Originally starting out with Ben and Tom, Fiona was brought on board to help bring a lighter tone and a more varied opinion. Or to keep Ben in line, we’re not sure. Either way, Fiona balances the podcast out nicely and the flogging is always in good taste. Nothing is off-limits. The question is, does the film hold up despite the flogging?
Now, we know the time, effort and sheer determination that goes into making a film, even the substandard ones. Sometimes though, you have to question the creative decisions. How did the movie end up this way? Who thought it was a good idea? FilmFloggers goes out of its way to challenge the absurdities of film that seem to have been overlooked, but in a fun, humorous and light-hearted way.
FilmFloggers also comes with regular impressions through the episodes. The Arnold Schwarzenegger impression in the recommended episode is particularly joyful.
FilmFloggers may focus on bad movies, but it’s a great podcast…
