Eli Rothā€™s Borderlands movie is exiting cinemas at some speed, as Lionsgate prepares a video on demand release within weeks.

Much has been made of the $100m asking price for the long-awaited movie adaptation of the videogame series Borderlands. The successful games though were finally turned into a film of some resources, with Eli Roth directing and co-writing the script.

Still, even though there were a few outliers, the critical consensus was that Eli Roth and his team hadn’t quite hit the mark here. Furthermore, the box office returns suggest that Lionsgate’s investment in the feature might take some time to recoup, and that the cinema days of Borderlands have come to a fairly abrupt end.

As per the modern way then, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the movie will now be leaping to premium video on demand services at some speed. While we await a UK announcement, Lionsgate in the US is now making Borderlands available at home from 30th August, just three weeks after it made its debut in cinemas.

If you’ve not had the pleasure, then you can see the trailer for the film here…

And here’s the synopsis for the movie too…

Starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.

A full physical media release still appears to be planned, with Lionsgate listing the movie on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK. No firm release date for that, but December-time is the early rumour. You can find the listing for the film here.
