Amazon’s Fallout TV series gets its first trailer. Here’s our first look at Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins in the post-apocalyptic show…

Recent years have brought us some ruddy excellent TV adaptations of video games (see: The Last Of Us, Castlevania) and some less impressive ones (sorry, Netflix’s Resident Evil…).

Happily, the upcoming Fallout looks as though it’s likely to belong on the ‘ruddy excellent’ part of the spectrum, with its debut trailer (see below) providing a glimpse of a series that is both visually captivating and – seemingly – smartly written.

Taking its cue from Bethesda’s hit franchise of the same name, Fallout sees its protagonist (here played by Ella Purnell) emerge from a nuclear bunker decades after the planet has been devastated by atomic bombs. Picking through the landscape, she must learn to survive in a world not unlike the wild west (check out Walton Goggins as a nose-free, gun-toting cowboy) – albeit with added mutant bears and some familiar-looking armoured soldiers.

Fallout is being brought to the small screen by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, previously of Westworld fame, with the duo having developed and written the script. As well as copious nods to the videogames (including Dogmeat the dog, those iconic blue outfits, and the aforementioned armoured soldiers, the Knights), it’s pleasing to see a streak of bleak humour running through the series. It’s all nicely in keeping with the retro-futuristic world that Bethesda has been building on for years now.

For those interested, here’s a synopsis, straight from Amazon itself:

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them. From executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of Westworld, starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and more.

Fallout will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video on 12th April 2024. We wonder if John Carpenter will be watching…?
