Director Gil Junger has been chatting about the direction of 10 Things I Hate About Dating, which won’t be a romcom this time…

After many years and one part-shot movie that never got released, director Gil Junger is finally working on a fresh follow-up to his delightful 1999 romcom, 10 Things I Hate About You.

The original starred Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. And as we’ve explored in the video that should pop up here, filming began on a sequel just over a decade ago. Filming, however, never finished…

In the last few weeks though, Gil Junger has revealed that he has a trilogy of follow-ups now in the works. 10 Things I Hate About Dating will be first, with the plan being to follow those with 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

But it’s 10 Things I Hate About Dating that’s first up, and Junger has been talking about the approach to the new film over at Entertainment Weekly. “You can’t imagine how many people have asked me over the last three years, ‘why aren’t you doing another one?’ And I’m like ‘yeah, I should.'”

There’s still not an official greenlight, but Junger’s approach is to not do a direct sequel, and instead bring fresh characters in. The source this time is a play I’m unfamiliar with, The Misanthrope, dating back from 1666. He’s penned the script with Naya Elle James, with Andrew Lazar producing, and the idea this time is not to make a romantic comedy, but to do a “trauma-bond-com.”

Bet you a quid that line doesn’t make it to the poster.

The central characters will be a “brutally honest podcaster” and a “polished dating coach”, who are leading a couple’s retreat.

Casting hasn’t been confirmed, and Gil Junger has more detail on the planned movie at EW, here. We’ll keep you posted.
