Severance | Apple buys rights, season 3 to begin filming this summer

Apple has bought the IP rights to Severance from its production company, while season 3 is expected to begin filming within the next few months.

Update: Sci-fi drama series Severance has grown into a slow-burn streaming success on Apple TV – so much so that its vastly rich corporate owners have brought the rights to the series.

Although emblazoned with the Apple logo on its opening titles, Severance was developed by the production company Fifth Season, with the first season emerging in 2022.

Apple has now acquired all rights to Severance in a deal worth $70m according to Deadline. Apple’s deeper pockets should mean that this complex and expensive to produce show ($20m per episode) will move a little more quickly under its new owners.

It’s now thought that Severance season 3 will begin filming this summer, and that the fourth season will be conclude the story. To fill in the three-year gap between seasons, Apple also plans to make some spin-off shows – something its creators have previously teased.

There’s likely to be a long wait until the next Severance appears, but fans can at least be assured that its gently surreal sci-fi world has a longterm future.

Our previous story follows…

21st March 2025: Just a day after Ben Stiller promised fans they wouldn’t have to wait for season 3 for too long, and mere hours after the season 2 finale dropped on AppleTV+, Severance has been officially renewed for another series.

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Severance has consistently been one of AppleTV+’s most acclaimed, popular shows, and Ben Stiller – who’s producer and director – has been talking about the new season being in the works for quite some time now. And it seems as though Ben’s Outie is just as ready as his Innie for season 3.

“Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” Stiller said in a statement. “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”

Creator Dan Erickson is thrilled to be digging into Lumon Industries more, too. “The idea of getting to make more Severance with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined,” Erickson said. “I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook also took to X/Twitter to confirm the happy news. He seems rather cheery, despite the fact that Apple was reported to be losing $1bn annually on its streaming service.

After today’s mind-boggling, phenomenal finale for Severance season 2, we can’t wait to see what happens next. Stiller has already confirmed that a writer’s room is working on the next steps, but there’s no word on how long exactly it’ll take before we can get back to our desks at Lumon for season 3.

We’ll keep you posted, though.
