It and It Chapter Two could be merged into a new, six-hour supercut, with deleted scenes put back in, director Andy Muschietti says.
Amid a new wave of Stephen King adaptations, It and It Chapter Two emerged (in 2017 and 2019 respectively) got in early as newer, glossier takes on the author’s weighty horror novel.
Years later, director Andy Muschietti and producer sister Barbara are still steeped in that same, clown-haunted world – they’ve made the spin-off TV series Welcome To Derry, and are currently working on its second season.
In the interim, they still have plans to produce a six-hour “supercut” of It, which, like Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair before it, will combine the two films into one, and add in scenes dropped from the original releases. Intriguingly, they’ve also talked about shooting new sequences to fill any narrative gaps.
The Muschiettis first teased the supercut as long ago as 2019, when It Chapter Two emerged, but other projects – including The Flash, which we’ll quickly gloss over – got in the way. Now, though, there’s talk again of releasing that newer, lengthy cut
“We’re in a moment now where we can definitely go to the studio and ask for support, but when is the question,” Andy Muschietti told SlashFilm (via Deadline). “They can say, ‘Yeah, go for it,’ but now we are sort of committed, like happily committed, to season 2 of Welcome to Derry. And there’s other movie projects going around. But we’re going to do it,”
Welcome To Derry has certainly been well-received so far, and with continued interest in the whole It universe, it’s possible that the six-hour combined release will emerge soon. Again, that second Derry season is currently being worked on, and there are currently a total of three runs planned for the spin-off show.
That supercut could be the ideal way of promoting the series – and with the 10 year-anniversary of the first film chapter already approaching, a means of re-introducing it to a new generation of horror fans.
