The sequel to Fast X, called Fast Forever, has been set for release on the 17th March 2028 – five years on from its predecessor.

Update: If budget was a sticking point, then it sounds as though the parties involved have resolved it. Per The Wrap, Universal has given the sequel to Fast X a release date: the 17th March 2028, and a title: Fast Forever.

Assuming it sticks to that release date, it means the sequel will emerge five years after Fast X – a film once intended as the first of a two-part Fast & Furious franchise finale, complete with cliffhanger. Fast X had numerous production problems, though, including the sudden departure of director Justin Lin and the late hiring of his replacement, Louis Leterrier.

The budget for Fast X was also a staggering $340m, and there have been reports that Universal wanted expenditure drastically reigned in before it greenlit the sequel. Throw in star feuds and big egos, and the result is a production that has spun its wheels for three years and counting.

โ€œNo one said the road would be easyโ€ฆ but itโ€™s ours,โ€ Vin Diesel wrote on Instragram. โ€œOne that has defined us and become our legacyโ€ฆ And a legacyโ€ฆ lasts Forever. March 17th 2028! FAST FOREVER.โ€

Our original story follows…

6th October 2026: Despite ending on a cliffhanger which suggested its story would soon be wrapped up, a sequel to 2023’s Fast X still hasn’t emerged. Vin Diesel has popped up to provide an update from time to time, but three years on, and there’s been little official sign of progress.

According to a report at the Wall Street Journal, the reason for the lack of movement on Fast XI – or Fast X Part 2, or Fast And Furious 11 – is due to budget. Fast X was thought to have cost around $340m to make, due in part to shooting in the pandemic, the last-minute hiring of director Louis Leterrier (who replaced Justin Lin), and constant script rewrites.

Fast X wasn’t a huge hit, either, with the franchise’s worldwide box office having steadily dwindled since its $1.5bn+ high of Furious 7 a decade ago. Universal executives are therefore insisting, according to that report, that the production on Fast XI saves money where it can, either by reducing global filming locations or featuring fewer expensive stars.

A script is said to have been written in recent months, but it’s thought that its action would require a budget of $250m; Universal is digging its heels in and saying it needs to be made for $200m.

Diesel has remained upbeat in his social media posts over the past couple of years, saying in November 2024 that Universal wanted the next movie in cinemas by March 2026 – the franchise’s 25th anniversary – and even suggesting that the saga would end with a 12th instalment.

This summer, Diesel popped up again at a racing festival to say that Universal wanted the next Fast film by April 2027. There are rumours that Universal is beginning to look beyond the franchise’s expensive stars, including Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and wondering how it can make The Fast & The Furious appeal to a younger generation of potential fans.

In the meantime, we’re still waiting to see how – or if – the series can provide a satisfying payoff to Fast X’s high-octane climax.
