Andy Muschietti is officially working on IT: Welcome To Derry season 2 even though the series hasn’t officially been renewed yet.
Last year’s IT: Welcome To Derry was one of the biggest surprises on TV. It may have come across as a desperate attempt to keep the franchise going with new material, but the series turned out to be a thoughtful and intriguing prequel to Pennywise’s adventures.
Even before the series premiered, Muschietti revealed there was a three-season plan for Welcome To Derry. HBO hasn’t shown a green light for another season yet, but that seems to be only a matter of time.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that a second season of the series is now in the works. However, HBO still hasn’t officially renewed Welcome To Derry for season 2, but that seems to be but a formality at this point if you were to believe the trade publications.
The article mainly focuses on DC’s Brave And The Bold, a Batman project that Andy Muschietti has been attached to for years, but it might now face even more delays if Muschietti’s attention stays in Derry.
Season 1 of Welcome To Derry handily set up the next seasons which will travel further back in time. The season explained that Pennywise experiences time differently, which explains why the next season would take place in 1935 and if a third season goes ahead, that would take us back to 1908.
Welcome To Derry was HBO’s third most watched debut in its history and the strong opening episode laid the path for some great horror sequences. Bill Skarsgard returned to his role as Pennywise The Clown, terrorising more kids, this time in the 1960s. The series sits at a respectable 81% critic score and 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, signalling the strong, positive reaction to it.
It seems safe to assume that HBO will formally renew Welcome To Derry, but we’ll keep an eye on that.
