HBO is finally moving forward with IT: Welcome To Derry season 2, but we’re likely still a while away from seeing it.
It’s been 10 months since we went back to the streets of Derry and watched Pennywise cause bloody mayhem in 1962. The series was also imagined to run for three seasons, with each season going further back in time, but despite the positive reception of Welcome To Derry, fans – this writer included! – have been left anxiously awaiting if HBO would give season two the green light.
And here we finally are! As Variety reports, HBO has finally renewed the series for the long-awaited second season, which will take place during the Great Depression in 1935.
The writers’ room for the new season already opened earlier this month, so a renewal was clearly looking likely. According to the logline, the new season “centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”
Andy Muschietti already teased the inclusion of the Bradley Gang back in April and promised a different tone and set-up for the season.
Brad Caleb Kane will be the sole showrunner for season two after sharing the responsibility with Jason Fuchs in the first season. There’s no news on casting yet, presumably we will have a largely new cast for this season due to its setting. Bill Skarsgard did reprise his role as Pennywise as well as playing Bob Gray, the human that eventually turns into Pennywise. No word on how closely Skarsgard will be involved, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
“There’s gonna be a lot of that depression-era hustling in the air in our characters. Everybody’s trying to get by and survive the circumstances. They are gonna do crazy things,” Andy Muschietti told Variety. “And of course, the social, cultural, horrible things that were happening in the era, too. We’re not going to skip those. [They are the] very center and the heart of our story.”
There was also no word on when we might see Welcome To Derry season 2, but it’s safe to say it’ll be a while. If the writers’ room has only just opened and there’s still the matter of casting, filming, editing and marketing, we might be looking at a long wait. This seems to have become the new normal with TV; we have great, high-budget shows, but we also have great, long wait times.
