The classic TV show Knightmare is returning as a free to download PC game in 2027 – and a trailer has been released as well.

One of the most groundbreaking children’s programmes of its era, the ITV classic Knightmare celebrates its 40th birthday next year. And here’s a lovely surprise: the anniversary is going to be celebrated by the release of a free PC adventure game.

The game, which was revealed over the weekend, is bringing back the cast of the TV show, and comes with the permission of the show’s creator, Tim Child.

Here’s the trailer for the game…

There’s also some accompanying blurb to give us a flavour what to expect..

Enter stranger! Lord Fear has returned and a new quest awaits. Only the bravest of Dungeoneers can don the famous Helmet of Justice and venture into this dangerous world of illusion. It is time to step boldly forward as the time of Knightmare begins again! Featuring:

  • Fully voiced by the original stars of Knightmare
  • Hand-drawn artwork and animation
  • Deadly puzzles
  • A simple point-and-click gameplay system

The game has been written by Ewen Watson, with artwork from Sathy Schlosser. You get the official theme tune for the show as well, and the proper logo too.

If you’re unfamiliar with the majesty of Knightmare, it was a technologically daring show that mixed in live action and computer graphics (using a Commodore Amiga, if memory serves) to bring to life a televised adventure game.

With Hugo Wyatt as Treguard, the setup saw four youngsters sent into battle. One had a helmet stuck on their bonce to cut off their vision, while the other three had to issue directions and solve puzzles. Rarely, chums, did it tend to go well.

The game has an official website that fills in a few more gaps, and you can find that here.
