Alfonso Cuarón will turn his eye towards cult horror with AppleTV+ greenlighting his new series, Ascension. More on that below.
AppleTV+ housed one of 2026’s most buzzed about horror shows, Widow’s Bay, and the streamer is already eyeing up their next terror fest. This time, with Alfonso Cuarón attached to the project.
Cuarón has been working on Ascension for a while now and it’s finally coming together, it seems. Inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel The Last Days, Cuarón’s involvement was first reported in 2017 when Casey Affleck was attached to the project.
Now, nearly ten years later, Ascension is moving forward with Apple TV backing the project as Variety reports. Caitríona Balfe has also been cast as the lead and is set to play a character named Rose, “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.”
Cuarón will be co-writing and executive producing the series with his brother Carlos, but it’ll be Natalie Erika James and Christian White who will be showrunners on Ascension. The pair already worked together on James’ superb 2020 horror film Relic and Apartment 7A, a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby, released in 2024. The pair certainly knows how to scare this writer’s socks off so we should be in excellent hands here.
Cuarón previously worked with AppleTV+ on Disclaimer, an erotic thriller series that has been gracing the streaming service’s library from 2024 onwards. The series starred Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lesley Manville and ran for one season.
There’s no word on when we might actually see Ascension on our TV screens, but we’ll keep you updated on that. In the meantime, if you’re looking for horror shows, I recommend Widow’s Bay but Prime Video’s upcoming Carrie is also looking very intriguing.
