Paddington 4 is slowly moving ahead after things being very quiet for a while. We heard in 2024 that StudioCanal wanted to make a fourth film and potentially some spin-offs too, but it’s only now that we’ve learned who’s going to be working behind the scenes to get the fourth movie going.
Variety has the scoop that Armando Iannucci and Simon Blackwell are set to write the script for the film. Naturally, there are no plot details to share and it’s safe to assume we’re still a while away from seeing everyone’s favourite British bear on the big screen.
Iannucci and Blackwell have previously collaborated on projects such as Veep and The Thick Of It and if Paddington 4 is anything like those, we’re in for a particularly sharp entry in the franchise. Will the duffel coated bear even try his paw at politics? The UK could surely use a bit of help on that front…
Variety also reports that Dougal Wilson, the director of the third movie, Paddington In Peru, is negotiating his return to the director’s chair.
This version of the bear created by Michael Bond in 1958 first made its appearance on the big screen in Paul King’s 2014 movie, simply titled Paddington. It was followed by 2016’s Paddington 2 and 2024’s the already mentioned Paddington In Peru.
Ben Whishaw voices Paddington in the films with Hugh Bonneville, Samuel Joslin, Madeleine Harris, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Simon Farnaby and Imelda Staunton also part of the large cast. Emily Mortimer took over the role of Mary Brown from Sally Hawkins for Paddington In Peru.
Paddington In Peru was the least successful entry in the franchise, bringing in £211m against a production budget of £90m. All three films still went down a treat with audiences and critics alike and have become firm family favourites.
StudioCanal was also interested in making a new TV spin-off but there’s no update on that yet. We’ll make sure to keep an eye on that and bring you more news on all things Paddington as they reach our news desk.
