You’ll be able to see Christopher Lee’s Count Dracula in glorious 4K with the film restored with footage not seen before.

Happy Dracula Day! To mark this wonderful day, Hammer Films has announced that they are releasing Terence Fisher’s iconic 1958 horror film Dracula in 4K. The film is also set to hit cinemas in October, but this won’t be a version you’ve seen before.

Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration have restored the film from archival materials from around the world, but they also included footage that was only believed to have been seen by the audience attending the film’s Japanese theatrical release in 1958. That footage has been missing for over six decades, but it will now be available on this new release.

“Bringing Dracula back to audiences in 4K goes far beyond a piece of film restoration work. This is the recovery of a piece of British film history that audiences believed had been lost forever. Seeing Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing together again in such extraordinary detail is a reminder of just how powerful this film remains nearly seventy years after its original release,” John Gore, CEO of Hammer Films and Executive Chairman of John Gore Studios, said.

The press release from Hammer Films doesn’t detail what the footage contains or how much of it there is, but it’ll certainly be interesting to see what it adds to the film. Dracula is generally considered one of the most influential – and best! – horror films in history and Christopher Lee’s performance, particularly him snarling “I am Dracula” has gone down in history as something truly iconic.

Lee and Peter Cushing, who played Doctor Van Helsing, starred together in 24 films in total. They never shared any scenes in 1948’s Hamlet or 1952’s Moulin Rouge, but their 22 horror and thriller movie collaborations left a huge mark in the genre’s history.

The press release or trailer doesn’t mention a specific release date, but promises it will arrive just in time for Halloween in October.

You can find more information on the new release of Dracula on the Hammer Films website.
