The cannibal show may have wrapped up a decade ago but showrunner Bryan Fuller is still thinking about Hannibal season 4.
Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal has a very loyal fanbase that has never given up hope that the series would return for a new season. Fuller has also always been openly positive about bringing Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy back for some more cannibalistic goodness, but so far, no luck.
Talking to The Horror Queers podcast (here via Bloody Disgusting), Fuller recently spoke again how much he’d like to bring back Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter, but it’s not just the showrunner who is keen.
“Everybody wants to return. Hugh [Dancy], and Mads [Mikkelsen], definitely. But also Lawrence Fishburne, Katie Isabelle, Caroline Dhavernas, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Aaron Abrams, and Scott [Thompson] all want to come back to the story,” Fuller said.
The original 3-season arc saw Lecter begin a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with Dancy’s Will Graham, an FBI investigator, whose ability to understand serial killers fascinates Dr. Lecter. While the series’ first season received positive reviews, it was the show’s next two seasons that really elevated it to cult status.
There is a little issue in trying to bring Hannibal back for another season, though. Producer Martha De Laurentiis’ passed away in 2021, meaning the rights to the character of Lecter are reverting back to writer Thomas Harris with MGM/Amazon also having some.
“They’re all being navigated in a way that is going to be a little trickier to iron out now. They’re in process, and I keep on touching base and trying to encourage folks to get back together,” Fuller assured.
Not all hope is lost then and if the entire cast are eager to return and the fanbase still loudly requesting more meals made out of human flesh with a side of psychological trickery, who knows, maybe we’ll be getting some good news sooner rather than later.

Fuller also seems to have a plan for another season, as he explained on the podcast. “I know exactly what season 4 of Hannibal is, and I was frustrated with Season 1. That felt a little more like traditional television to me. There was a lot more ‘murder mystery of the week’ crime procedural kind of things. I was not necessarily drawn to that as an audience member, but I thought Season 2 was better. Season 3, I was like, ‘Okay, this is what we should be doing. This is what I want to be doing. This is the type of storytelling that I think the show can do,” Fuller explained.
“And there are a lot of people who don’t like Season 3, and I was like, ‘Well then, you really don’t want a Season 4, because that’s it.’ If you’re not down with Season 3, then you’re not going to be grooving on the plan for Season 4 because it’s following that arc,” he concluded.
