Months after his horror hit, Sinners, director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that he’s heading back to Marvel for Black Panther 3.
Released in April, vampire-horror Sinners was one of those rare modern things: an original studio film that found both critical acclaim and success at the box office. If you were wondering what else writer-director Ryan Coogler has planned, he’s confirmed it over the weekend: the filmmaker’s heading back to Marvel to direct Black Panther 3.
“If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny,’” Coogler jokingly said at a Deadline live event over the weekend. “But we’re working on it hard. … Yeah, it’s the next movie.”
Coogler, of course, co-wrote and directed the original Black Panther, released in 2018, which made over $1.3bn in cinemas. He returned for the 2022 sequel – a production that was rocked by the tragic passing of its title star, Chadwick Boseman; the Black Panther mantle then passed to Letitia Wright, who plays the Wakandan princess (and sister of T’Challa), Shuri.
Little is known about Black Panther 3 at this stage, give that the film isn’t thought to be due until early 2028. Denzel Washington said last year that Coogler’s writing a role for him in the superhero flick, though, so it’s likely he’ll play a major part in its story (you wouldn’t waste a calibre like that in a disposable role would you?).
Coogler’s repeated success means he’s rather busy. Besides his Marvel work, he’s also producing a new take on classic 90s sci-fi series, The X-Files. There isn’t a great deal known about that project at the moment, either.
Sinners' $340m in ticket sales has also prompted stories about a sequel, though Coogler has denied that he has plans to work on one. Our hope? That he gets to make another non-sequel, non-franchise movie again soon. Assuming Black Panther 3′s another big hit, maybe it’ll give him the creative freedom to make another original film like Sinners.
More on Coogler’s movements as it comes in.
