Amazon MGM is moving forward with a new Stargate TV show which will air on Prime Video. More on that below.

Rumours of a new Stargate series have been circling around for a few years now. Roland Emmerich’s 1994 movie spawned three live-action series as well as a short-lived web miniseries and a few direct-to-video movies and it was once considered to be one of the biggest sci-fi franchises on our (smaller) screens.

Amazon is now officially moving ahead with a new series based on the franchise. Naturally, plot details are being kept under tight wraps and the series doesn’t even have an official title yet. We do know Prime Video will be the service you’ll find it on, though.

Martin Gero is behind the new Stargate show. Gero started his career with the franchise, having written for all three of the live-action series.

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on ‘Stargate: Atlantis,’” Gero said as detailed by Variety. “I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, ‘Stargate’ taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

We do like the sound of that. Emmerich and Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original movie, will serve as executive producers and franchise veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will be credited as consulting producers.

Stargate SG-1, running from 1997 to 2007, was a huge success. The series offered a lighter, funnier alternative to series like Battlestar Galactica and The X-Files, providing different kind of thrills. In a 2016 Digital Spy user poll, Stargate SG-1 was named the fourth best sci-fi series of all time, behind Doctor Who, Babylon 5 and Firefly.

We’ll bring you more Stargate news as they reach our news desk.
