23 Jump Street will probably never happen according to lead actor Channing Tatum and there’s one person to blame.
Ever since 22 Jump Street – the first sequel to 21 Jump Street – premiered in 2014 and was a sizable hit, people have been asking when undercover cops Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) might return for a third outing. The third part in the franchise has been long delayed, but Tatum said he’s still very keen on making another film as we reported in 2024.
It’s not looking good though.
In an interview with Variety, the topic of 23 Jump Street came up again, and Tatum said he gets asked about it more than other film, before admitting the film is practically dead now.
“I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film — if not more — because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time,” the actor said.
In fact, the problem seems to be one specific producer: Neil H Moritz.
“Neal’s price for a producer fee is huge,” Tatum explained. “And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.”
According to the Variety piece, Tatum, Hill and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, all also producing, agreed to take smaller producer fees, but it seems Moritz isn’t budging.
2012’s 21 Jump Street was a feature reboot of the iconic 1980s TV show. The first film grossed over $200m worldwide and its sequel brought in even more cash. Both films received positive reviews, with particular praise going to Tatum and Hill’s odd-couple dynamic and chemistry.
Moritz’s producing career also includes Sonic The Hedgehog films, TV’s The Boys and Prison Break and the similarly troubled Fast & Furious franchise.
If things change regarding 23 Jump Street, we’ll let you know, but it seems like it’s time to bury all hopes of another sequel.
