Danny Boyle, director of the original 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, has urged people to support the new films to help get the third financed.
Both Danny Boyle and Nia DaCosta recently made an appearance at Sonyās CinemaCon presentation to promote their upcoming films in the 28 series. 28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. Boyle directs the new film from a script by Alex Garland, who wrote the 2002 original as well as its sequel.
While on stage (as covered by The Hollywood Reporter) Danny Boyle revealed that the team has not yet finalised financing for the planned third movie in the 28 Years Later trilogy and fifth film in the wider series. He urged fans to support the first two movies, and while the audience he was playing to would naturally be in agreement, letās hope that his message spreads far and wide and that the two 28 Years films perform well enough so that Boyle and his collaborators are able to conclude their planned arc.
Last we heard, Danny Boyle was planning to direct the third film, although if financing still isnāt in the bag, reports that the film was set to shoot this month may have been wide of the mark.
The director talked a little about his upcoming project 28 Years Later which will debut in June, saying: “I still love an apocalypse, British-style⦠I still love the infected. And I still love blowing shit up.”
As for Cillian Murphyās highly anticipated return to the series he would say only this: “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”
DaCosta, meanwhile directed the forthcoming second film in the new trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Itās dated for January of 2026, meaning weāll be getting two 28 films in half a year. “I was able to let my freak flag fly. While it’s very much informed by 28 Days Later, the script for The Bone Temple is very different,” DaCosta said.
Weāll bring you more on the news as we hear it, but that June release date isnāt too far away now. Weāre looking forward to seeing what fresh horrors Boyle and his fellow creatives have in store for us.
