A comedy spoof of Barbenheimer is officially in the works as filmmaker Charles Band looks to cash in on 2023’s biggest cultural phenomenon.

The simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer led to some punters doing a rather deranged double-bill of the two very different films. It was quickly nicknamed Barbenheimer and we should have known back in July that someone out there was going to make a comedy out of it.

Well, that somebody would be Charles Band, a 70s B-movie cult icon, who took to the American Film Market (AFM) to sell his upcoming Barbenheimer project. As described by The Hollywood Reporter, the film follows Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer (no, we’re not kidding), a scientist doll living in Dolltopia, who is driven to build an atomic bomb to take out all humanity after witnessing the cruelty dolls go through at the hands of humans.

“They got great looks and a super attitude! Oh, and now they’ve got the bomb,” reads the synopsis and the film’s tagline, seen on the poster, reads “D-Cup, A-Bomb”.

“It’s 100 percent true,” Band commented on the rather unbelievable film premise. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the bizarre coupling of these two movies and the combination of Barbie’s vibe and the darkness of Oppenheimer. You mix that together and you have such an opportunity for dark humor.”

The inspiration came from needing a little humour going into 2024 and from Band’s biographer Adam Felber, who suggested Barbenheimer would make a great film. Nothing has been shot yet, but The Hollywood Reporter expects cameras to start rolling next year.

Band is a prolific B-movie producer with an impressive filmography that consists of over 400 titles. His latest and 397th feature film is titled Bad CGI Gator and I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I would like to watch that, immediately. Band’s other credits include Troll, Puppet Master and Ghoulies

We have no idea if Barbenheimer will ever land on UK soil, but we sure hope it does.
