Ghost In The Shell meets the xenomorph (kind of) in Alien: Earth. Here’s the first trailer, with some eyeball-popping moments.
Well, it looks the part, doesn’t it? After months of teases the first full, proper trailer for the forthcoming Disney+/FX/Hulu TV series Alien: Earth has arrived. And by jingo is it full of revealing shots.
This is, have course, the much-anticipated series from showrunner Noah Hawley – one that we’ve known about and pondered over for some time. It’s a prequel to the original Alien from 1979, and as the name implies, details what happens when the universe’s deadliest xenomorph somehow makes its way to our planet.
Alien: Earth also explores the advent of a new technology which allows the consciousness of a human to be placed into the body of an android – the result being Wendy (Sydney Chandler), who has the body of a grown-up but the mind of a child. She’s among the residents of a remote research facility on an island called Neverland, whose experiments are thrown through a loop when a Weyland-Yutani ship, the Maginot, crashes into the place, issuing forth a torrent of xenomorphs and other critters.
As we’ve heard in earlier teasers, there’s more than one species of alien in Hawley’s series. Besides the xeno, there are four other biological abominations – among them a jellyfish-type affair “built to climb into and dislodge the eyes of other living organisms.” I think we can even see the beast in action in one quick cut.
After months of obscurity, it may even be a bit too revealing, with the fates of some characters seemingly given away. It all looks wonderfully retro and 1979, though, and Wendy looks like a watchable lead – and seemingly inspired by Ghost In The Shell's Major Kusanagi, with her stylish haircut and combat skills. Look out too for a glimpse of Timothy Olyphant’s android character, who looks a bit Roy Batty off of Blade Runner. That’s two cyberpunk reference points in one trailer. Not bad going.
Alien: Earth is due to slither greasily onto UK televisions on the 13th August.
Our eyeballs are ready.
