Ridley Scott is still planning to make another Alien film – although it looks as though he’s abandoning the path of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
When Disney acquired 20
th Century Fox, it soon became clear – as had been expected – that the plan was to greatly reduce the number of films made by the studio. Furthermore, following the Disney ethos of blockbuster films, to focus more on the big franchises than individual risks.
As such, the
Alien franchise falls under that umbrella. The series has been in stasis since
Alien: Covenant underperformed at the box office, even though director Ridley Scott had plans for at least one more – and probably two – movies in the franchise. Those plans were put on hold, though, and Scott is currently making
The Last Duel for the studio instead.
However, it seems as though there’s been some progress. Scott has given a new interview to
Forbes, where he’s discussed where next for the series. And it turns out the plan is to take the new film down a different path again.
“That’s in process. We went down a route to try and reinvent the wheel with
Prometheus and
Covenant”, he said.
“Whether or not we go directly back to that is doubtful because
Prometheus woke it up very well. But you know, you’re asking fundamental questions like, ‘has the Alien himself, the facehugger, the chestburster, have they all run out of steam? Do you have to rethink the whole bloody thing and simply use the word to franchise?’ That’s always the fundamental question”.
What that sounds like is that the film which
Covenant would have led directly into is no longer happening. But until we hear more, it remains up in the air.
Scott, incidentally, was promoting
Raised By Wolves, the new sci-fi drama heading to HBO Max in the US. It is not linked to the Caitlin and Caroline Moran sitcom of the same name.
