Matthew Vaughn returns to the world of spy films with Argylle, starring Sam Rockwell and Bryce Dallas Howard. Here’s the teaser trailer, which co-stars a cat.

Matthew Vaughn scored a huge hit with the Kingsman franchise, which has so far comprised two films and a prequel, with another sequel in development.

In the meantime, Vaughn has made another offbeat spy thriller, in the form of Argylle. The synopsis reads as follows:

“The greater the spy, the bigger the lie.” Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. When the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

Other cast members include Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson.

Vaughn directed the film from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. The trailer below doesn’t give much away, but Argylle's marketing department bills it as “From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn.”

We’re just hoping the poor cat landed on something soft, like one of those carts full of hay you find everywhere in the Assassin’s Creed videogames.

Argylle will be released in cinemas on the 2nd February, before streaming on Apple TV+.
