A trailer has emerged for Artificial – director Luca Guadagnino’s film about the creation of ChatGPT. Get a hint of what Amazon dumped here:
In June came the startling news that Amazon MGM had decided to drop director Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, Artificial. About the creation of ChatGPT and OpenAI’s mercurial CEO, Sam Altman, it has a starry cast: Andrew Garfield, Cooper Hoffman, Monica Barbaro and Mark Rylance are among the big names.
Artificial soon found a new home at indie studio Neon, with the company premiering the film at the New York Film Festival in October before putting it in US cinemas on the 25th December.
Judging by the trailer below, it’s quite a dark Christmas present. Edited and scored like a horror movie, it features quick glimpses of Garfield in tight trousers as Altman, clambering out of a gothic-looking sports car and marching into what looks like a combination of country retreat and armed bunker.
We hear soundbites from elsewhere in the film that suggest the film will explore the darker side of AIA’s latest wave. “Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse,” a voice says as the camera flashes past racks of firearms.

When it divested itself from Artificial, Amazon’s boss said that the film “Might be better served elsewhere.”
A cynical part of us wonders whether, given Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar links with OpenAI, it preferred not to have its name attached to a film that criticises one of its corporate partners.
The Social Network with apocalyptic overtones? Well, we’re certainly intrigued. We’ll update you when we get a UK release date.
