Reported to be in the early stages of development, Feig’s link with the project has popped up in Hollywood trades, but it’s not entirely clear which The Italian Job it’s going to be sequel to.
Will it follow on from the 1969 original, starring Michael Caine, that ended on the actual definition of a cliffhanger perhaps? There was talk of a sequel to that movie for some time, that would follow a search for the funds that would have dropped, without giving too much away.
Or: there was talk too of a sequel to the 2003 version of The Italian Job, that starred Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and a contractually-obliged Edward Norton. Directed by F Gary Gray, that was a decent movie, and for a while, Paramount tried to get a follow-up called The Brazilian Job up and running. That ran out of steam.
Presumably, it’s Paramount behind the new version too, with its aim to get more movies up and running and in cinemas. The inspiration for that is coming from the past at the moment, but with no known writers as of yet attached, we can but wait and see if this one gets motoring. Might be an idea not to let Vin Diesel near it.
As for Paul Feig, he has another film to make first anyway. He’s about to dive into production on The Housemaid 2 for Lionsgate, which is due in cinemas at the back end of 2027. It follows The Housemaid becoming his biggest hit to date, trousering $400m of a modest budget.
More on all of this as we hear it. But not expecting much more in the way of news about the new The Italian Job soon.
