As Disney prepares to remake Moana in live-action, Auli’i Cravalho reveals she won’t be part of the project.

With the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid hitting cinemas next week, thoughts are turning to Disney’s next live-action reimagining. News broke last month that Dwayne Johnson was spearheading the remake of Moana, notable as being the first film under a decade old to receive the treatment, the original having only been released in 2016.

The film follows the titular girl as she teams up with demigod Maui to stop a curse he accidentally unleashed. Singing, and good singing at that, was involved.

While it was originally thought that both original leading actors Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho would reprise their roles as Maui and Moana, Cravalho revealed that she will not be acting in the project, although she is staying on as an executive producer alongside Johnson.

Cravalho said in a statement that “When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career”.

However, “in this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital the casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So, as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength. I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible peoples, cultures and communities that help inspire her story”,

Original screenwriter Jared Bush is returning to pen the script.

There is no release date as yet, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
