The legendary nemesis from the Austin Powers trilogy may be gearing up for a long-awaited comeback.
Here’s a rumour that floats around every so often, but this time with a little twist. The existence of a fourth Austin Powers film has long been mooted, with star Mike Myers mentioning on several occasions that he’d be up for a return to the role. However, Myer’s star is not what it once was and the actor has largely settled for supporting roles for the last few years. The actor’s recent Netflix series, The Pentaverate, was pretty limply received too, doing little to create a clamour for a return to the world of The International Man of Mystery.
However, the rumour mill has sparked up once more and here’s the twist: New Line Cinema is said to be interested in reigniting the Austin Powers franchise, but rather than focusing on the shagadelic superspy as the first three films did, the project will instead be a Dr Evil movie.
Myers recently resurrected the character for a Super Bowl ad and could be eyeing this shift in focus as a way to reignite what is, at this point a very dormant franchise. Bringing back the character of Austin Powers poses a few problems on multiple levels, whereas New Line might see a Dr Evil focused film as a way to partially circumnavigate some of said issues and thus protect its bottom line. For now, the story remains unconfirmed but we’ll be watching things carefully and let you know if anything develops.
