The news that Hollow Knight: Silksong has been pushed back beyond June means it could launch alongside Blasphemous 2.

Yesterday’s announcement from Team Cherry that Hollow Knight: Silksong won’t launch in the first half of 2023 came as a disappointment to fans who have been patiently waiting for the game’s release since it was heralded back in 2019. But for the developers of rival Metroidvania Blasphemous 2, it was disastrous news.

I think I’m legally allowed to publicly display how a panic attack looks like in games development,” said level designer Enrique Colinet at Blasphemous developer The Game Kitchen in a tweet. He accompanied the message with picture of the news that Silksong has been delayed, along with an image of the release date of Blasphemous 2 in late summer 2023. There’s now a chance that both games could launch very close to each other, and considering the huge pent-up demand for the long-awaited Hollow Knight sequel, it could spell bad news for The Game Kitchen if the games went head to head.

The original Blasphemous game was published by Team17 and launched in September 2019. It drips with beautifully grotesque religious imagery, using Catholic iconography and designs based on the Spanish Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions (the game’s developer is based in Seville). Like Hollow Knight, it’s rock hard in places, but it’s also thoroughly absorbing, with a huge and fascinating world to discover. Basically, it’s well worth your time if you’re a Metroidvania fan. The sequel is being built in a new engine from the ground up, and will continue the story of The Penitent One, the game’s dunce-hatted protagonist.

Colinet followed up the tweet with a picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi saying: “You were my brother, Silksong, I loved you.”

Let’s just hope both of these worthy games don’t end up in a dramatic fight to the death (or a thorough maiming).

Blasphemous 2 is due out in late summer on Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
