A fresh ensemble will be joining Kenneth Branagh and his mighty moustache for A Haunting in Venice, the third outing in his Poirot series.

We’ve known for around six months or so that another adventure for Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot is on the way. With shooting set to begin imminently, some key details have been revealed about the project. The new film is called A Haunting in Venice and is set to go before cameras at the end of this month.

The tone of the film is said to be more ‘unsettling’ than the previous two films, which sounds like a fun change of pace. The plot however, will be reassuringly familiar. According to the film’s synopsis, ‘The story begins in post-WW2 Venice when a 13-year old girl, who claimed she witnessed a murder when she was younger, is found dead in an apple-bobbing tub. Hercule Poirot is now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city. He reluctantly attends a seance at a decaying, haunted palazzo and when one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.’

Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jude Hill and Kelly Reilly will lead the cast of the 20th Century Studios picture, whilst Emma Laird, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Ali Khan and Riccardo Scamarico will also feature.

The film is based on the lesser known Poirot adventure Halloween Party, which also features the recurring character of Ariadne Oliver, whom Fey is thought to be playing. That character is a female whodunnit writer whom Christie used for self-satire, which sounds like it could be fun.

No release date has yet been announced but we’d imagine a spooky thriller like this will be angling for late 2023, perhaps even next Halloween if things move quickly. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
