A sequel to beloved 90s rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding is in the works, with Celine Song writing the script.
Another day, another sequel. Earlier this week, we learned that Gurinder Chadha was busy working on a sequel to her 2002 football flick Bend It Like Beckham. Dan Trachtenberg is also planning more Predator “stuff” with Arnold Schwarzenegger in mind and Happy Gilmore 2 has just appeared on our Netflix front pages.
The latest blast from the past getting a sequel is 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding. Starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney, the film followed two friends who had vowed to get married if they were still single at 28. The film is largely considered one of the best romantic comedies from the 1990s, particularly due to Roberts’ charming performance.

Celine Song, one of the most interesting filmmakers emerging from Hollywood, has been tapped to write the script, as Variety reports here. Song’s 2023’s feature debut Past Lives found itself in the Oscars race for Best Picture as well as Original Screenplay. The writer-director’s most recent release, Materialists, is also about to debut in UK cinemas, so there’s plenty to get excited about for My Best Friend’s Wedding 2.
At this point, Song is said to be working as screenwriter rather than director.
It’s still early days, so there’s also no news on whether Roberts and Mulroney, or any of the supporting cast – which included Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett – would return. The original My Best Friend’s Wedding was directed by Australian filmmaker PJ Hogan and written by Ronald Bass, and again, was received very positively by critics and audiences alike. Not only did it make a decent amount at the box office – just under $300m globally – the film has become a certified classic of its genre.
We’ll keep you posted on more developments on My Best Friend’s Wedding 2.
