Hollywood has got just a little warier of sequels over the past few years, and many that were in development – such as a new chapter in the Die Hard franchise – now appear to be in some kind of limbo. But still: follow-ups are very much on the cards, and here’s our always-evolving list of all the sequels we know about.
After series
Based on books series of the same name we’ve already had After and After We Collided. With 4 books in the series, the film adaptations for books 3 and 4 After We Fell and After Ever After completed production at the end of 2020. In addition to this, it was announced in April 2021 that there would be an additional 2 films. Before, a loose adaptation of the prequel book, as well as another film set in the future, with the focus this time on the children of the first films leads. At the same time, distributor Voltage Pictures have said the fifth installment, 2023’s After Everything, marked the end of the franchise, so we’ll have to wait and see if anything else crops up.
The Animal 2
Yes, Rob Schneider is returning for a sequel to 2001’s The Animal. Schneider will once again be playing the role of Marvin Mange, a man who gets animal parts following a near-fatal injury. Those animal parts lead to him behaving differently. Patricia Schneider, Rob Schneider and Jamie Lissow are set to pen the script, and the current plan is for Schneider to direct, too. Instead of going to cinemas, The Animal 2 has been ordered for Fox’s Tubi platform. Filming on this unlikely sequel was set to start in 2023, but nothing seems to have come through yet.
Aladdin 2
Following the giant success of Disney’s live action take on Aladdin in 2019, the studio is now said to be considering a follow-up to the movie. Although whether it’ll follow the path set by the animated The Return Of Jafar is unknown. Producer Dan Lin confirmed that work is being done to explore another film, although as of yet, no further announcements have been made. There are also plans for a Disney+ spin-off project that may or may not replace a direct sequel.
Alien: Romulus 2
20th Century Studios was very pleased with the critical and commercial success of 2023’s Alien: Romulus that a sequel became a bit of a no-brainer. Director Fede Alvarez was expected to return but announced officially in September 2025 that he would give it to someone who would “go for the jugular”. Alvarez and his regular writing partner Rodo Sagueyez will still pen the script and Alvarez will produce with Ridley Scott, but the hunt for a new director is on.
A Quiet Place 3
John Krasinski will return to direct another movie about aliens with very good hearing. Little is known about the third film, including whether Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds will return. We do however know that the film will hit cinemas 9th July 2027.
Atomic Blonde 2
Charlize Theron headlined the action hit Atomic Blonde back in 2017, and it was revealed pretty soon after that that sequel talk had begun. Director David Leitch, as recently as summer 2019, confirmed that a follow-up was still being chatted about, but he also suggested it may not head to cinemas, with instead a streaming service picking the project up. The events of 2020 do seem to have made this one less likely, sadly.
Attack The Block 2
Joe Cornish is directing the sequel to his debut feature, one decade on from the original. What’s more, he’s got his star back too, with John Boyega leading the cast once again. Boyega will also produce this time as well. Still no news on a release date, but Boyega has confirmed that the story has been completed.
Avatar 4 and 5
Avatar: Fire & Ash arrived in cinemas in December 2025 and very quickly broke the magical $1bn line at the box office. James Cameron has long promised more Avatar films, but during the press tour for Fire & Ash, the director seemed a little uncertain if that was still in the cards. Technically, Avatar 4 and 5 are still scheduled for 2029 and 2031 respectively, but the director has said he’s going to be holding a press conference to reveal plot details if Avatar 4 and 5 won’t move ahead. All we can do is wait and see.
Avengers 5 and 6
This is a long one.
Once titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth Avengers film will see a new group of heroes take on the title. Originally pitched as a showdown between Kang, who was introduced in Disney+’s Loki series, and the titular superhero team, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton was initially set to direct, with Ant-Man 3's Jeff Loveness writing the script.
When Kang actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment at the end of 2023, however, the project took an emergency about-turn. In a glitzy San Diego Comic Con performance, Infinity War and Endgame directors the Russo brothers were announced as the project’s new shepherds, reuniting them with an old pal – Robert Downey Jr, swapping his Iron Man suit for a natty green cape in the role of Marvel arch-villain, Doctor Doom. The next Avengers film was retitled Doomsday accordingly.
Following fairly closely behind is Avengers: Secret Wars, which will apparently end the ‘Multiverse saga’ of films that began with Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Doomsday (pending another production crisis) will now be released in May 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027.

The Batman 2
Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson are both set to return to the world of the caped crusade for a sequel to The Batman. Reeves will write and direct the film and, after multiple delays, the film is due to begin filming in 2026 for a 2027 release date. Stay tuned.
The Beekeeper 2
It’s official! Jason Statham is returning to his beekeeping duties and general ass-kickery in a sequel that is set to go into production later in 2025. Timo Tjahjanto is taking over from David Ayer on directing duties, but there’s simply no replacing Statham. No release date yet, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
Bend It Like Beckham 2
File this under “Did not see that coming!”. Gurinder Chadha recently revealed that a sequel to her 2002 football movie is in the works! Chadha confirmed that all the old cast, including leads Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, were aware of the project but no one had committed yet. With the huge rise in interest for women’s football, this one seems particularly timely and exciting.
Bill & Ted 4
It only took 29 years for Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter to reunite on the big screen with 2020’s Bill & Ted Face The Music. According to the latter’s January 2024 appearance on The Sarah O’Connell Show, though, ideas are being floated for another instalment to come at a comparatively blistering pace – though nothing is confirmed yet. “We’re tinkering with a fourth movie idea that all of us like, and the guys are going to write, so we’ll see”, Winter said. “It takes us time to get these things going, and we never want to do them unless they’re great”.
Black Panther 3
Director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that he’s returning to Wakanda next as he wraps up the big press and awards tour of his 2025 hit film Sinners. Letitia Wright is expected to return as the titular superhero and Marvel is planning to release the movie in 2028, so we’ve got some time to kill still.
Chucky 8 (9?)
Don Mancini revealed he’s working on a new theatrical Chucky movie. It would return to the original timeline that started with 1988’s Child’s Play and be the eight film in that continuity. There was also 2019’s Child’s Play reboot but that currently exists on its own universe and most of us are trying to forget it exists. Mancini also promised to make Chucky scary again, so fingers crossed he does that!
Clifford The Big Red Dog 2
The animated/live action hybrid film about, well, a canine of some size proved to be a solid box office performer. In double quick time, Entertainment One has ordered Clifford The Big Red Dog 2. Jack Whitehall is expected to return. As well as the mutt of the title. No word on where this might be at the moment.
The Conjuring 0.5
Okay, so technically this is a prequel, not a sequel, but we’re counting it. The Conjuring: The Last Rites was supposed to act as the closing chapter to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Ed and Lorraine Warren, but the film broke all kinds of franchise records at the box office, so naturally, Warner Bros. were eager to keep the momentum going. The studio announced that Rodrgio Huart will be directing a prequel, which will focus on the earlier years of the demon hunters’ life.
Constantine 2
Despite the management shake up that’s gone on at DC, placing James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge, a sequel to 2005’s Constantine is still in the works. Star Keanu Reeves (who plays the titular occult expert) and director Francis Lawrence are both set to return. The sequel hasn’t appeared on the newly announced slate of DC movies, so we don’t yet have a release date. It is, however, in development.
Crazy Rich Asians 2 and 3
Two sequels are planned to the hit 2018 romantic comedy, all based on books by Kevin Kwan. The plan is – because of scheduling conflicts – to shoot them both back to back in 2020, with the first likely to be released in 2021. Filming is now expected to begin in 2025, with Jon M. Chu returning to direct and Amy Wong writing the script after Adele Lim departed the project over a pay dispute.
Creed 4
After some well-received success with the ninth installment in the Rocky-verse, Creed III, star Michael B. Jordan is set to return as director of the sequel, according to producer Irvin Winkler. “We’re planning to do ‘Creed 4’ right now — it’s in the works — and we think we have a really good story, a really good plot,” Winkler said. He added that the plans were delayed “because of strike, like everybody else” but “probably a year from now [November 2023] we’re going for pre-production.” That clearly never happed, but in 2025 Michael B. Jordan did say he’s still interested in returning as director but said he doesn’t want to make it just to make it.
Darkman
Rumours of a sequel to Sam Raimi’s Darkman have been circulating for a couple of decades now, but there is still hope. In fact, Raimi himself confirmed that he’s still working on another film, but financing is proving to be an issue. Isn’t it always… Raimi won’t be directing, instead teasing he has found two directors to helm the project and a script is already written. All they need now is the cash to get the ball rolling.
Demolition Man 2
Sylvester Stallone announced on his Instagram feed in May of 2020 that a follow-up to 1993’s Demolition Man was finally on the cards. Warner Bros is backing the project once again, and development is underway. No word yet on if writer Daniel Waters is returning, nor any timescale for the project.
Detective Pikachu 2
Announced even before the first film proved to be such a delight back in 2019, Oren Uziel has signed on to pen the next Pokemon movie. Ryan Reynolds was expected to be back on voicing duties, and Rob Letterman was assumed to be directing, but as of 2026, the project hasn’t materialised. We’re not feeling very confident about this one, but it also hasn’t been officially cancelled, either.
Dirty Dancing 2
35 years have passed since 1987’s Dirty Dancing was released. Now it’s getting a sequel (there is also a prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, starring Andor’s Diego Luna, mind you). Original star Jennifer Grey set to return to the role of Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman. A teaser for the sequel was shown at CinemaCo. Footage from the original film was shown along with a voiceover announcing Baby’s return to Kellerman’s – the name of the movie’s summer resort. Grey will also be executive producing. There’s no release date yet, but we will keep you informed.
Drag Me To Hell 2
Despite Sam Raimi’s 2009 horror film having a pretty definitive ending for its main character, a sequel is currently in development. Raimi revealed in a Reddit AMA(Ask Me Anything) that ideas are being formed for the potential sequel, and he’s hoping to find the perfect one.
Dune: Sandworm Drift
Denis Villeneuve returned to Arrakis with aplomb in 2024’s Dune: Part Two, and after making a shedload of cash at the box office, it’s no surprise that the director is in talks for a sequel. Thought to be based on the notoriously “unfilmable” second Dune novel, Messiah, Villeneuve is currently having a chat with Legendary productions about when production will get underway proper, though a script seems to be nearing completion already.
Edge Of Tomorrow 2
Tom Cruise might be stuck in another time loop as early as this year (2026) according to reports! Doug Liman and Cruise have been chatting about a sequel to their 2014 actioner ever since it debuted, but nothing has ever materialised. Until now, it seems. There are rumours that Cruise and Blunt are set to return and filming might begin soon, but there’s no official word on any of it. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, though.
Evil Dead 6 + 7
Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise was a bloody, crunchy and sometimes blackly comic entry into Sam Raimi’s horror franchise. Evil Dead Burn is set to hit cinemas in Summer 2026, but will be a standalone entry in the long-running franchise, bringing the total number of Evil Dead films to six. Things are looking good too, with Evil Dead Wrath also announced and that sequel will hit cinemas in 2028.
The Exorcist
With David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer underperforming in critically and commercially, Universal and Blumhouse are having to rethink their plans for the horror franchise. A planned sequel, subtitled Deceiver, has already been scripted as was planned to once again be helmed by David Gordon Green. All that is now apparently under review. Given that Universal paid a whopping $400m for the rights, it’s clear that there will be more Exorcist films coming our way. Mike Flanagan is directing the new one, which will be set in the same universe as Friedkin’s original and it’ll hit cinemas in March 2027!
F1
Brad Pitt will presumably take the wheel again in a sequel to Apple’s Oscar-nominated (!) Formula 1 sports drama. While the sequel hasn’t formally been announced quite just yet, Apple executives told the press to stay tuned for an announcement of some kind. Considering just how successful Joseph Kosinski’s movie, starring Pitt and Damson Idris, was, a sequel seems almost inevitable.
Face/Off
Director Adam Wingard and his writing partner Simon Barrett are at work on a new Face/Off movie, that we’re now told will be a sequel to the 90s favourite, rather than a remake or reboot. That said, don’t expect either John Travolta or Nicolas Cage to return. The movie is in its early stages, so more details are a little way off yet.
Fall 2 and 3
2022 thriller Fall created its suspense from the vertigo-inducing heights involved in its story. It saw box office success, but has really found its audience after landing on Netflix. Now, it’s set to get two sequels! Director Scott Mann is returning to work on both films, serving as producer on both instalments, as well as co-writing and directing the third movie. The film will apparently incorporate the characters from the first movie, while also making room for new characters to be introduced. We’re not sure Fall needs two sequels, but we’re intrigued at least.
Fast & Furious 11
With Fast X released in cinemas in May 2023 (and ending on a pretty big cliffhanger), we’ll have to wait for the next instalment to find out what becomes of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his family. Now teased as the final chapter in the franchise, Fast Forever is set to hit cinemas in 2028, but is currently undergoing some rewrites. Again.
Final Destination 7
After the success of Final Destination Bloodlines, Warner Bros is moving full steam ahead with another instalment of their delicious cruel horror franchise. Lori Evans Taylor, who co-wrote Bloodlines, has been brought back to pen the new film. No plot details yet, but we’re willing to bet a lot of people die in very extravagant ways.
Free Guy 2
Disney may have inherited the film Free Guy when it bought up the Fox film company’s assets, but this is one of the few films it acquired that way that hit big. Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy are now both returning for more, as Free Guy becomes a franchise, but Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has caused surprising delays as the creative team had to re-work their approach to a fictional character becoming self-aware again.
Frozen 3
With the news of job cuts and falling Disney+ subscribers comes some good news – there are some more sequels to their billion-dollar-grossing hits on the way. One of them is Frozen 3, although at the moment that’s all we know. There’s no expected release date or filmmaker attached, but we’ll let you know more once those details are announced.
Gerard Butler Has Fallen 4, 5 and 6
Following the success of Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen and more recently Angel Has Fallen, Gerard Butler is now expected back as Mike Banning up to three more times. A spin-off TV show is being planned too. No release dates as of yet, but don’t expect them to mess around knocking these out. The first will be called Night Has Fallen.
Girls Trip 2
A sequel to the 2017 comedy Girls Trip is definitely happening, according to the film’s co-writer Tracy Oliver. The next movie will reportedly see the main characters (played again by Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish) travel to Ghana in a bid to attend annual festival Afrochella. Haddish confirmed that a script has been finished and the studio is hoping to start filming in the summer of 2026.
Gladiator 3
With Gladiator II premiering in cinemas in November 2024, Sir Ridley Scott is wasting no time planning another entry into his Roman epic saga. There’s not a lot to say yet, as another entry into the franchise likely depends on the performance of Gladiator II. The Alien director did tell us in an exclusive interview that he had already started drawing storyboards for the film. Whether any of the cast from either film would make a return in another sequel, is still open.
Godzilla = Kong
The Godzilla-Kong monsterverse is the kaiju that never stops stomping, with the last installment, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire cruising to $559m worldwide. It’s no surprise, then, that Warner Bros are looking at a follow-up. Legendary announced in May 2024 that David Callaham, who wrote the early drafts to Godzilla (2014), has been tasked to write a sequel to The New Empire, with Adam Wingard reportedly keen to come back in the director’s chair.
Gremlins 3
Gremlins 3 is officially in the works and will hopefully hit cinemas in 2027. Warner Bros. have attached Chris Columbus to direct while Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein are penning the script. Steven Spielberg is also getting comfortable in the producer’s chair.
Greyhound 2
That’s right, Tom Hanks’ World War II film Greyhound is getting a sequel, too. After the original was released on the Apple TV+ streaming service during the pandemic, it’s reported that the sequel will be released there as well. Greyhound became the most-watched film debut on the streaming service at the time, so it’s no wonder they’ve greenlit a second one. It’s part of an exclusive deal between Hanks’ production company Playtone Productions and the Apple streaming service.
The Grinch 2
It’s official! Jim Carrey is returning as The Grinch in a new sequel and Ron Howard will also return to direct. Rumours of a sequel to 2000’s Christmas classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas have been circling for years now and Carrey has always said he would come back if he didn’t have to go through the gruelling make-up process again. Now, motion capture and CGI have made the actor’s return possible. No release date for this one yet, though.
Gunpowder Milkshake 2
Director Navot Papushado’s Gunpowder Milkshake – starring Karen Gillan and Lena Headey – hadn’t even been released when Studiocanal announced its follow-up at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. No word yet on when it’ll go into production, just that it’s happening.
Happy Death Day 3
This one is still waiting for the green light from Universal, by Happy Death Day filmmaker Chris Landon is extremely keen to get cracking on a third film in this incredibly fun slasher series. Landon has said his vision for this one is pretty ambitious, with it being bigger in scale and needing a bigger budget than the previous two movies. He’s also open to the sequel being released on streaming rather than in cinemas, so we’ll keep an eye out and see what happens with this project.
Heat 2
Michael Mann has been planning a sequel to his 1995 thriller Heat for quite some time now, after penning a novel that acted as both a sequel and a prequel with Meg Gardiner. Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are set to star in the film and filming is set to begin in November 2026. DiCaprio will take on the role of Chris Shiherlis (played by Val Kilmer originally) while Bale will play Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino’s character).
Hobbs & Shaw 2
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are set to return for the Fast & Furious spin-off’s sequel, following the sizeable success of the first picture. The announce of the project’s existence came in March 2020, so there’s still a long way to go before it makes it to the screen. But it’s supposedly happening, albeit awaiting a writer and director.
Hocus Pocus 3
After the success of Disney’s belated sequel to the cult classic Halloween movie, there’s a third one in development. Anne Fletcher, who directed Hocus Pocus 2, and Jen D’Angelo, who co-wrote the script with Fletcher, are both returning. No news yet on whether the Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker will be reprising their roles as the Sanderson sisters, but Midler has expressed her love of the character in interviews.
The Housemaid 2
Paul Feig’s adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel of the same name turned out be a bit of a box office juggernaut and a sequel was quickly greenlit. The movie is set to be an adaptation of The Housemaid’s Secret, the second novel in the series. Feig will return to direct with Sydney Sweeney returning as the titular housemaid Millie and Michele Morrone will be back as Enzo.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 (Live-action)
Universal greenlit a sequel to its live-action How To Train Your Dragon film before the first film has even been released. The film had an enthusiastic reception at an early screening at CinemaCon 2025 and director Dean DeBlois, along with the film’s cast, announced a sequel was in the works and would appear in the cinemas 11th June 2027. Expect more dragons!
I Am Legend 2
Will Smith’s post-apocalyptic thriller is set to get a sequel. This time, Creed's Michael B. Jordan will be starring, and it will be set a few decades after the first film. It’s pressing ahead at Warner Bros, but there’s no news yet on who will be directing, but Steven Caple Jr. was eyed for the gig at one point.
Ice Age 6
Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary and Simon Pegg are all returning for a brand new Ice Age adventure. Ice Age 6 is currently in production, but Disney didn’t reveal a director yet, nor is there a release date either. The film saga follows two woolly mammoths, a sloth, a saber-tooth tiger and a weasel as they try to survive the on-going ice age. Disney has also confirmed that Scrat, the scene-stealing squirrel with a love of acorns, will return along with Baby Scrat (everyone say “Aww!”).
The Incredibles 3
Originally announced in August 2024, The Incredibles 3 is moving forward as Pixar sets Elemental director Peter Sohn as the director. Brad Bird is still involved as a screenwriter. The third film will return to follow the antics of the Parr family; father Bob, mum Helen and kids Violet, Dash and JackJack. Oh, and they’re all superheroes!
Insidious 6
Following the huge success of 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, Blumhouse is moving forward with the sixth Insidious movie. Lin Shaye will return and will be joined by Amelia Eve. Jacob Chase and David Leslie Johnson have penned the script with Chase also directing the new instalment. With Shaye’s involvement, it’s likely that the film is another prequel, following Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key.
It Follows 2
The It Follows sequel is moving ahead once again. Titled They Follow, the film is supposed to begin filming “in the months to come” according to producer David Kaplan in February 2026. Director David Robert Mitchell has been very busy with Flowervale Street so once that’s out the way and out in the world, we assume his time and attention will be devoted to creepy people following poor Maika Monroe again.
John Wick 5
We knew that Lionsgate had been working on expanding the John Wick universe – mainly with spin-offs like next year’s Ballerina and the TV show The Continental. It seemed pretty clear, though, that 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4 was made to bring the series to a close. Nonetheless, Lionsgate doesn’t seem to want to leave the franchise alone, and thus chairman Joe Drake has teased that John Wick 5 is in early development. We’re not exactly sure what the story will entail, but it’s likely to tie in with all those spin-offs that are currently in the works.
Jumanji 4
The core cast of Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black are set to return for another Jumanji adventure, that’ll presumably pick up from around where The Next Level left off. Director Jake Kasdan is in the director’s chair again and the film, which is still missing its subtitle, will emerge in cinemas in November 2026.
K Pop Demon Hunters 2
The two-time Oscar winner is set to get a sequel! Huntrix, aka Rumi, Zoey and Mira, will be back to slay more demons with their singing, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until 2029 or even later to return to the franchise’s colourful world. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to write and direct. There are no details on what the sequel might be about, but there were a lot of storylines and lore that was cut from the first film, so perhaps the next film will dive deeper into previous Hunters and Rumi’s family tree.
Kick-Ass 3
Matthew Vaughn has revealed that a new chapter in the Kick-Ass franchise is in the works. When the first movie landed in 2010, just shortly after the Marvel Cinematic Universe became a thing, it felt like a fresh and bold twist on a new cinema trend. The sequel was a bit less successful. Now, over a decade later, we’re due a third film. The characters from the previous movies won’t be returning, and the threequel will feature an entirely new cast of characters. It will, however, be set in the same world as the other Kick-Ass instalments. Speaking at New York Comic Con, Vaughn named this new film a “reboot” and plans to once again change people’s perceptions of what a superhero movie could be. With Marvel floundering just a bit and relying on big concepts like the multiverse to carve out its future, there’s potentially a lot of new genre conventions for a Kick-Ass film to satirise.
The Last Witch Hunter 2
Here’s another surprise. It’d generally been regarded that the Vin Diesel-headlined The Last Witch Hunter was not a very successful movie. We neither remember it burning a trail at the box office or being a huge fan success. But it certainly has its collection of supporters, as Lionsgate is now reported to be in early development on a sequel. Diesel is involved in the conversations too, although it may yet be some way away.
Legally Blonde 3
Okay, technically this isn’t Legally Blonde 3. This is more Legally Blonde 0.5, because Elle, a new TV series, will focus on earlier years of our favourite lawyer Elle Woods. The show, which finished production earlier this year, is heading to Prime Video in 2026.
Lilo & Stitch 2 (Live-action)
Disney is bringing back everyone’s favourite blue alien for another live-action adventure! The studio announced the project with a brief teaser with Lilo driving a pink convertible. Personally, I don’t think someone as chaotic as Lilo should be driving a convertible, but hey ho. The Lilo & Stitch live-action film has grossed over $910 million at the time of writing, so it’s no wonder Disney wants to hurry another one into production.
Lights Out 2
Lights Out 2 has been in development for 10 years now, since David F. Sandberg made his feature directorial debut with 2016’s Lights Out. There’s finally been a little movement with Lights Out 2 finding itself a new screenwriter, so could we finally be seeing the monster that hides in the dark again? Lights Out was a major success in its day so the studio is probably excited to try and repeat that, but we’ll have to see how that goes.
Live Die Repeat And Repeat
Tom Cruise’s crowded schedule has thus far pushed back the Edge Of Tomorrow sequel, that director Doug Liman has confirmed will be called Live Die Repeat And Repeat. Production might start in late 2026 or whenever Cruise’s schedule clears up. He’s one very busy man.
Lord Of War 2
Nicolas Cage is booked and busy at the moment, and now it’s confirmed that he’s returning for a sequel to 2005 war film Lord Of War. It’ll be written and directed once again by Andrew Niccol, and Cage will be reprising the role of Yuri Orlov, a character based on multiple real life arms dealers. The follow-up, titled Lords Of War, will also feature Bill Skarsgard as Orlov’s son. No release date for this yet, but it certainly sounds interesting.
Mallrats 2
Kevin Smith has resurrected his plans for a Mallrats sequel, and is working on a screenplay for the film, that he’ll also direct. This is separate from the once-planned and abandoned MallBrats movie of a few years’ back. Expect the core cast all back. A possible 2020 start date was on the cards. No sign of it yet though, several years on.
Men In Black
Sony is hoping to bring back Will Smith for a fifth instalment of the classic alien-heavy franchise (we’re not counting Men In Black: International...). Only Chris Bremner, writer of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die and Bad Boys For Life, has been hired so far, but things are looking promising.
Michael 2
Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic debuted to strong numbers but mostly negative reviews, but a sequel seems to still be in the works. It might still film in 2026, although Fuqua isn’t returning, it seems. With Michael ending in the late-80s, it’s almost inevitable that the sequel will have to touch upon the more controversial times of Jackson’s life.
Midnight Run 2
Here’s a surprise. The 1988 buddy road movie Midnight Run starred Robert De Niro and the late Charles Grodin. De Niro is returning to produce a big screen follow-up (overlooking the three sequels that were made for television). Regina Hall – who’ll be producing as well – is the only announced cast member for the belated sequel at this stage though. But it’s definitely happening.
Mitchells Vs. The Machines 2
Sony Pictures Animation is officially making a sequel to their underrated 2021 animated science fiction comedy. Unfortunately, the first film has only grown in relevance since its release and the Mitchell family will probably once again face off against some sort of robot threat or AI.
Mortal Kombat 3
Despite mixed reviews for the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat, Warner Bros had big plans for the entire franchise. Actor Joe Taslim revelaed that he had signed on for four films in total, all depending on the success of the first film. Despite a modest box office, the IP was strong enough for WB to develop a sequel which is finally hit cinemas in May 2026. A third film is also in development, but let’s see how things so with the second one first.
The Mummy
We’re not entirely sure whether this is a complete reboot or a sequel, but Brendan Fraser’s involvement would hint that this is indeed a sequel to 1999’s excellent The Mummy and its sequels. Radio Silence, the directors behind Ready Or Not and Scream VI, are reportedly directing, but that’s pretty much all we know at the moment. Perhaps this will offer us a chance to forget the 2017 The Mummy finally…
My Best Friend’s Wedding 2
Celine Song is writing the script for My Best Friend’s Wedding 2. There’s no word on whether Julia Roberts’ food critic Jules or her romantic interests Dermot Mulroney or Rupert Everett would return. Song is currently only writing the script rather than in talks to direct, but considering her excellent handle on on-screen romances, we seem to be in good hands.
New(er) Police Story
In 2004, the Police Story franchise got a soft reboot with New Police Story, and now star Jackie Chan has announced a sequel. He will be both producing and starring, and Nicholas Tse, who co-starred in the first movie, will be making his directorial debut.
Night Of The Living Dead
George A. Romero’s classic zombie franchise seems to still be going strong, with one last sequel announced. The Paz Brothers will direct Kate Beckinsale in the sequel that doesn’t yet have an official title or a plot description. Before he passed, Romero was working on a sequel, titled Twilight Of The Dead and according to reports, the idea was to set it on “decimated Earth” where people are fighting each other. Whether this new sequel is bringing those ideas back is unclear at the moment, but we’ll wait to see what happens.
Now You See Me 4
The long-awaited third Now You See Me film hit cinemas in 2025 with the Four Horsemen back doing all kinds of tricks. The film’s first weekend in cinemas was a roaring success so that vaguely planned fourth film might become a reality sooner rather than later. Whispers of it have been around as long as the third film’s been in production, but we’ll just have to wait for official word on this one.
Ocean’s 14
All Quiet On The Western Front director Edward Berger is being courted for another installment in the starry heist-franchise, according to Deadline, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt both said to be reprising their roles. Series director Steven Soderbergh doesn’t seem to be officially involved as yet, making this the first film in the franchise not to boast his involvement (as well as directing the original trilogy, he served as producer on the 2018 spin-off/sequel/reboot Ocean’s 8).
Orphan 3
Esther will return to the big screen in Orphan 3 as Lionsgate officially moves ahead with another sequel to 2009’s excellent The Orphan. That film got the prequel treatment in 2022’s Orphan: First Kill and considering the original film’s ending, which we won’t spoil here, we’re fairly sure the third instalment will also be a prequel. Isabelle Fuhrman will once again play Esther as she preys on another family and William Brent Bell, who also directed Orphan: First Kill, is also set to return as is writer David Coggeshall. Production wrapped in late 2025 and the film has been titled Orphans.
Passion Of The Christ: Resurrection
Mel Gibson’s film The Passion Of The Christ remains one of the most successful independent movies ever made. He’s hired Braveheart writer Randall Wallace to pen the script for the film, and Jim Caviezel is once again expected to play Christ. A rough release date of 2021 had been mooted, with Gibson directing again. We’re still waiting, though.
Paw Patrol: The Movie 3
The Paw Patrol movies have been proving quite popular, and news of a third movie being greenlit has arrived. No news on what the story will be, but the last one saw the main characters turn into superheroes called The Mighty Pups, so there’s a lot of room for creativity there. Cal Brunker is once again set to direct, with 7th August 2026 penciled in as the release date.
Sequel Of The Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes
When Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the studio began working on a sequel to the Planet Of The Apes reboot trilogy. Titled Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, the film attached Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball to direct, and was envisioned as the first part of a new trilogy in the long-running simian franchise, following the adventures of Kingdom’s new protagonist, Noa.
The Simpsons Movie 2
Colour us surprised. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie will return to the big screen in 2027, a whopping 20 years after the animated family made their movie debut in 2007. You can catch them in cinemas from 23rd July 2027. There’s no word on plot details, but the tagline read “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” David Silverman directed the first film, but 20th Century Studios haven’t revealed if the director is also coming back for seconds or if someone else will step in.
Spaceballs 2
Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and Rick Moranis are returning for a sequel to their 1987 cult hit Spaceballs. Production has officially begun and Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman have also joined the cast. Spaceballs 2 is set to hit cinemas in 2027, 40 years after the release of the original movie. Josh Greenbaum is directing from a script by Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
Practical Magic 2
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will return to play witchy sisters Gillian and Sally Owen in Susanne Bier’s sequel to one of the most underlooked 90s films. We recently also learned that Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will reprise their roles as the sisters’ aunts and Joey King will play Sally’s daughter in the film. Other than that, details are scarce but filming is currently underway and we can expect Practical Magic 2 to hit cinemas 18th September 2026.
The Princess Diaries 3
Yet another sequel that Disney currently has in the works. The Princess Diaries films, led by Anne Hathaway, are beloved teen rom-coms from the early 2000s. The Princess Diaries 3 will be directed by Adele Lim and Hathaway is returning as everyone’s favourite princess Mia Thermopolis. She will also produce!
Red Notice 2 and 3
Netflix was so happy with the performance of the Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds globe-trotting action adventure Red Notice that it wants more. Two more, in fact. It wants Red Notice 2 and Red Notice 3 to shoot back to back. Rawson Marshall Thurber will be back to write and direct as well and production was expected to start in 2023, but never did.
Red State 2
In the wake of the release of Clerks III, Kevin Smith seems set to follow up another of his movies – 2011’s Red State. A sequel was previously impossible because of some pesky rights issues (Lionsgate had trouble contacting the copyright holders), but it now seems they’ve become more responsive as time has passed and plans for a sequel are back on track. While Michael Parks, who appeared in the original film, passed away in 2017, Kevin Smith is eager to push forward – especially if he can get John Goodman to return.
Repo Man 2: The Wages Of Beer
Alex Cox is making an unexpected return to the cult film he made 40 years ago. The sequel is said to pick up immediately after Cox’s delightfully left-field 1984 film, though given how long it’s been since that came out – and that co-star Harry Dean Stanton has sadly passed away since – makes us wonder how. Buffalo 8 Productions is backing the project, so it’s looking good.
Riddick 4
After a long wait, it’s finally been confirmed that a fourth film in the Riddick series – officially named Riddick: Furya – is in the works. Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy are teaming up once again for this sequel that will see anti-hero Riddick return to his home world of Furya. We don’t know which foe his will face just yet, but it’s confirmed not to be the Necromongers that served as the antagonists in Chronicles Of Riddick.
Road House 2
After the success of Prime Video’s Road House, the streamer has quickly greenlit a sequel. Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as hard-as-nails former MMA fighter Elwood Dalton, but no news on who else might star in the film. No news on a director either, but consider Doug Liman was very vocal he wanted Road House to get a cinema release, describing it as a “war with Amazon”, we’re not sure he’ll be back.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
Here’s another random film getting an even more random sequel a couple decades late. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 2 – title pending – will see Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino return to their iconic titular roles. The new film will reportedly include a mix of the original cast from the 1997 movie as well as new blood and production has already started in Los Angeles. Tim Federle is directing with original writer Robin Schiff returning for writing duties once again. The film is unlikely to hit cinemas at all, streaming on Disney+ and Hulu instead.
RRR 2
One of 2022’s unexpected breakout films, RRR is an over-three-hour-long extravaganza of action, musical numbers and stunt work. Now it’s been announced that writer V Vijayendra Prasad and director S. S. Rajamouli are working on a follow-up. The father and son team admit that they’re only in the very early stages of development, but they do have a story idea. This may take some time to come out, but in the meantime RRR is available on Netflix.
Rush Hour 4
Disgraced director Brett Ratner is eager to get Rush Hour 4 going, but it’s not looking good. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker have seemingly passed on the opportunity and the multiple sexual assault allegations against Ratner – whose photo also appears in the Epstein files – don’t exactly make this hot property. Maybe it would best to let this one go.
Samaritan 2 (2amaritan?)
In 2022’s Samaritan, Sylvester Stallone played a retired superhero that most of the world believed to be dead. Young boy Sam believes differently, and turns out to be right. It started out as an interesting film that focused on its characters – at least in the first half. Amazon has been happy enough with the viewing numbers that it’s now developing a sequel that will again star Stallone. He’s also co-producing through Balboa Productions. We don’t yet know anything about the story or whether Julius Avery will return to direct, but Samaritan screenwriter Bragi G Schut is coming back to pen the sequel. We can expect this to land on Prime Video when it’s ready for release.
Saw 11
This one is back in development! The road to Saw 11 has been long and bumpy, but Blumhouse has come to the franchise’s rescue and is bringing back James Wan and Leigh Whannell. The pair have promised that Saw 11 will once again focus on Jigsaw and won’t be another Spiral. No word on when we might see this, but it does look promising. Fingers crossed.
Scary Movie 6
The popular horror spoof franchise returns for yet another sequel in June 2026. Anna Faris and Regina Hall have been confirmed to return with Shawn, Marlon and Keenan Wayans along with Rick Alvarez are penning the script. Michael Tiddes will be sat in the director’s chair and we’re relatively confident in saying Scary Movie 6 will take the piss out of the elevated horror trend and A24.
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark 2
A sequel to the $100m+ global horror hit is on the way. Andre Ovredal is returning to direct, with Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman likewise on scripting duties again. Guillermo del Toro is coming up with the story for this one, presumably based on Alvin Schwartz’s source novels. No timescales as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted…
Scream 8
Scream 7 exploded into cinemas and blew away all expectations during its first weekend. With such a strong opening, the possibility of Scream 8 is already being talked about. Apparently writer-director Kevin Williamson and star Neve Campbell were brainstorming ideas at 3am on set and producer Marianne Maddelena teased that a sequel could start filming as early as this autumn. It doesn’t look like we’ve seen the last of Ghostface, despite the mostly negative reviews. Nothing has been confirmed, but we feel confident enough to include Scream 8 on this list.
The Sea Beast 2
One of the films Netflix quietly released in 2022 was The Sea Beast. A beautiful animated film with plenty of heart and full of fun, the streaming service claims it’s now the most-watched animated film on the platform. Unexpectedly then, a sequel is in the works. Chris Williams, who directed and co-wrote the first film, has a deal with Netflix that means he’ll also be helming The Sea Beast 2. We’re excited for this.
Shaolin Women’s Soccer
Writer/producer/director Steven Chow became internationally known for his 2001 feature film Shaolin Soccer, which blended the martial arts movie with the sports comedy. Over 20 years later, it seems that Chow’s interested in revisiting that concept with a sequel. Now going by the title Kung Fu Soccer, the film has finished filming and there’s even a brief teaser to tie us over while we wait for an official UK release date!
Shrek 5
Rumours that DreamWorks were eyeing up a new Shrek film have been swirling for a while, but it wasn’t until Eddie Murphy let slip that he’d recorded dialogue for the project in June 2024 that we got something close to official confirmation. It’ll be out in 2026. He also mentioned a Donkey movie, but didn’t have many more details than that.
Sister Act 3
Whoopi Goldberg will be getting back in the habit (sorry) for a third Sister Act film, that has been greenlit by Disney. It’ll be heading to the Disney+ service rather than getting a theatrical premiere. Still in the early days this one though, but it’s definitely happening, and is due towards the end of 2022.
Smile 3
With Smile and Smile 2 earning solid reviews from critics and attracting many a bum to a seat, Smile 3 was pretty much a no-brainer for Paramount. The second sequel to Parker Finn’s 2022 hit is set to begin production in 2025 with Finn returning behind the camera. Smile 2 had a very quick turnaround from filming commencing in January 2024 and the movie itself hitting cinemas in October, but we’re still awaiting news on when we might see Smile 3, especially as Finn is also busy working on his Possession remake.
The Social Network 2
Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing The Social Reckoning exploring Facebook’s later, rather tumultuous and controversial years. Jeremy Strong will take over the role of Mark Zuckerberg and the project is reportedly based on Wall Street Journal’s The Facebook Files, a series of articles by Jeff Horowitz from 2021. Sorkin has spoken about his desire to write a sequel to David Fincher’s Oscar-winning film, but also said he’d only do it if Fincher would be back to direct. Well, it seems that Fincher wasn’t up for the job, so Sorkin stepped in. Let’s hope the sequel is as good as the first film!
Sonic 4
Paramount Pictures are feeling very confident in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, which at the time of writing hasn’t even hit cinemas yet. In fact, the studio is so confident that plans for a fourth film have been announced. Jeff Fowler directed all three Sonic films, but there’s no word on whether he might be returning. There’s also no plot details to share, but we’re going to guess Sonic will be joined by another new character as he was in Sonic 2 (Knuckles, Tails) and Sonic 3 (Shadow). No promises though! Sonic 4 is now scheduled to hit cinemas 19th March 2027.
Spaceballs 2
It’s been nearly 40 years since Mel Brooks’ Star Wars parody Spaceballs was released, but it’s never too late to make a sequel. Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Daphne Zuniga will all return to their roles from the first film and the sequel, officially titled Spaceballs: The New One, will be directed by Josh Greenbaum. Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit are in charge of the script and the film will be in cinemas April 2027.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 3
The Oscar-winning animated favourite – surely in the running for the best Spider-Man movie to date – is getting another sequel to end the trilogy. Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse was originally set for an early 2024 release, but after the Across The Spider-Verse came out there were rumblings that the animation was nowhere near done. In August 2023 we heard that the film has indeed been delayed, and so far there’s no replacement release date. That’s partially a good thing, though, as it hopefully allows the movie’s animators to put their best work into the film without feeling an overwhelming amount of pressure.
Superman: Man Of Tomorrow
James Gunn is busy not just running a studio but working on a sequel to his 2025 superhero movie Superman. As you might have guessed, even if you haven’t seen it, Superman brought the iconic superhero back on the big screen and pretty well, too! A sequel was naturally in the cards and Man Of Tomorrow is set to grace our screens in 2027 with David Corenswet returning as the titular caped superhero and Nicholas Hoult returning as big bad Lex Luthor.
Talk 2 Me
Independent Aussie horror film Talk To Me has been somewhat of a surprise hit. Directed by Michael and Danny Philipphou, AKA YouTube duo RackaRacka, the film sees a group of teens play ill-advised games with an embalmed hand that allows them to speak with the dead. The box office returns and great word of mouth means that a sequel, titled Talk 2 Me, is already in the works. Both Philipphou brothers will return to direct, and Danny will write the screenplay with Bill Hinzman. The brothers have previously said that they have ideas for more films – including a prequel – so perhaps those ideas will make their way into this movie.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: More Mutant Mayhem
With its artsy animation style and fun protagonists, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been very positively reviewed (here’s ours, featuring five stars!). Paramount quickly greenlit a sequel which is now set to come out in 2027 and a TV series for streaming that will bridge the gap between movies. A notable cartoon character that was missing from the movie is the antagonist known as Shredder. Perhaps we’ll get to see him in action in the next film.
Tintin
The news we have been waiting for for 15 years have finally arrived. Peter Jackson has announced that he is working on a sequel to 2011’s The Adventures Of Tintin. You might remember that Jackson didn’t direct the 2011 animation – Steven Spielberg did – but he was a co-producer on it, but it seems Jackson will helm this one as the two directors had made a deal that they each direct one Tintin movie. We look forward to that.
Top Gun 3
Maverick will return! Paramount has officially announced that Top Gun 3 is in the works. Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer will once again team up to bring Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell back, but there’s no word on who might write or direct the film. Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun Maverick and considering what a huge hit that was – and a darn good movie too – Paramount might try to convince him to return.
Twisters 2
World Of Reel reports that a sequel to Twisters is in the works at Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Twisters 2 hasn’t been officially announced, so we’re still waiting to confirm the news and whether Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones would return to their roles. Consider what a huge hit Twisters was, especially in the US, it wouldn’t surprise us if the studios were keen to get this in production as soon as possible.
Violent Night 2
David Harbour shook up the festive season of 2022 when he played a surprisingly violent Santa Claus in action-comedy Violent Night. The movie may have been up against James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way Of Water, but it’s still been a great success for Universal. The producers have recently announced a follow-up, with director Tommy Wirkola also returning. The team are still getting their ideas together right now, but we could see some more traditional Christmas-related things in the sequel, like the North Pole, Mrs Claus, or the elves.
Wedding Crashers 2
A project that had been mooted around the time of the 2005 original, the Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson-headlined comedy hit Wedding Crashers may be finally getting a follow-up. Director David Dobkin, along with Vaughn and Wilson, have been in very recent talks over a new film, and it looks as though this one’s back on the radar. Nothing concrete yet, but it appears alive…
The Wild Robot 2
We still haven’t quite recovered from the emotional wrecking ball that was The Wild Robot, but we’re very much in favour of a sequel. Rumours of one have been around since the film premiered and those rumours have now been confirmed and The Wild Robot 2 is officially on the way! The sequel will be based on the second book in the novel series, The Wild Robot Escapes and original director Chris Sanders will be writing the script while Troy Quane and Heidi Jo Gilbert will direct the feature. No word on a release window yet.
Wind River 2
Taylor Sheridan’s 2017 neo-Western Wind River. is getting a sequel It doesn’t seem to have too much in common with the first film, but it is called Wind River: The Next Chapter. Martin Sensmeier will return, and Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood and Chaske Spencer are joining him. The Falcon And The Winter Soldier helmer Kari Skogland is directing. Filming happened in 2023, but it’s been very quiet since then.
Wonka 2
No one should be surprised that Wonka 2 is in the works. The 2023 festive film starring Timothée Chalamet was a huge hit for Warner Bros., bringing in an impressive $632M at the global box office. The film is rumoured to be coming out in 2027 after WB scheduled an “untitled family sequel” for release on 17th December. Chalamet is expected to return to his role as Willy Wonka and Paul King mentioned he would love to see Wonka do a bit of international travelling in the sequel so we’re expecting to see our boy Willy hop on a RyanAir flight to Magaluf.
World War Z 2
Better late than never, right? After 13 years, Paramount has finally announced a sequel to their Brad Pitt -starring zombie hit. Over a decade ago, JA Bayona and David Fincher were rumoured to be taking the reigns of a sequel but, obviously, nothing ever came of those rumours. There’s no word on who might take the sequel on now, but let’s hope things move a little faster now that the project is officially on the move.
24 Jump Street
Well, this is a surprise. We had lost all hope that we’d ever see another 21 Jump Street film, but here we are. The Shocking news that 24 Jump Street is in fact heading to our screens in the near future. It’s still early days and many things could go wrong, so we could be getting ahead of ourselves, but we’re a positive bunch so we’re choosing to believe that 24 Jump Street will happen and will see Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return to their roles as Schmidt and Jenko. We can’t wait.
28 Years Later 3
With The Bone Temple in cinemas now, the question is whether the rumoured third film will actually happen. To be completely clear, at the time of writing this, no third film has been officially greenlit. That being said, the first two were always planned as part of a trilogy. Danny Boyle has already called dibs on directing and Alex Garland is reportedly writing a script, but all seems to depend on whether The Bone Temple makes some money at the box office. The film came in slightly under projections during its first weekend in cinemas, but it’s still early days.
