A teaser trailer has been released for the Lin Manuel Miranda directed, Andrew Garfield starring tick, tick BOOM!  Ahead of the release of In The Heights next week, we have our first look at another Lin Manuel Miranda project, his feature directorial debut tick, tick… BOOM!  It also marks the second Garfield trailer in two days, with his role in this project looking vastly different to The Eyes Of Tammy Faye. tick, tick… BOOM! is an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, creator of multi-award winning Rent. The film follows Jon (Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have? Miranda directs, and though not a stranger to the big screen or musicals having famously written the books for stage shows In The Heights and Hamilton as well as starring in films such as Mary Poppins Returns and composing for Moana, this marks the next step in his career and potential global domination. Larson wrote the original version of the play, performing it off-broadway as a one man show before his death in the mid 90s. After this, Pullitzer Prize winning David Auburn went on to adapt the piece in to a 3 act play which has had various revivals across the years including a 2014 version starring Miranda in the lead role. Steven Levinson has penned the screenplay for the film adaptation. Recognise that name? That’s because he wrote the book for the stage show Dear Evan Hansen (you know, that other stage musical adaptation releasing later this year, which he also wrote the screenplay for). Joining Garfield for the self reflective musical spectacular are Alexandra Shipp (X-Men Apocalypse), Tony Award nominee Robin de Jesús (The Boys In The Band), Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Tariq Trotter, with Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light (Transparent), and Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers). The film is Garfield’s first musical performance, but he is no stranger to the the stage, winning a Tony Award for his role as Prior Walter in an Angels In America revival in 2017 (you can still rent and watch that award winning performance via National Theatre at Home.) Most of the cast are known to have treaded the boards, Henry has previously worked with Miranda with roles in his stage shows in In The Heights, Bring It On: The Musical and Hamilton whilst both MJ Rodriguez and Hudgens have starred in runs of Larson’s play Rent.   Thank you for visiting! If you’d like to support our attempts to make a non-clickbaity movie website: Follow Film Stories on Twitter here, and on Facebook here.
