The ensemble for Christopher Nolan’s next film is becoming more impressive with each new name. The latest new name: Charlize Theron.

Last week it was Robert Pattinson, this week it’s Charlize Theron. The early marketing campaign for Christopher Nolan’s next film continues to drip-feed us star names, with Theron being the latest A-lister to join an ensemble that already includes Pattinson, Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, with Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya taking on supporting roles.

Despite a host of rumours, we don’t yet know what Nolan’s next project is, but we’re enjoying the slow reveal of the film’s starry cast. Theron’s addition to the project brings in an actor who can really do it all, with the Mad Max: Fury Road star having conquered just about every genre in the cinematic landscape.

Theron’s next project is a sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard for Netflix, but that one has been in the can for a while. She’s about to star alongside Taron Egerton on the survival thriller Apex.

Inevitably, Deadline – which reported on the casting – doesn’t have any details about what role Theron will play. With any luck, the actor will join Hathaway in a key role rather than in a supporting slot, not only because they’re both brilliant at what they do, but because with a cast like this, Nolan might get to counter the enduring criticism that he hasn’t created a female character as rounded and compelling as his male protagonists (or antagonists).

With the likes of Theron, Hathaway, Nyong’o and Zendaya on deck, he’ll surely never have a better chance than this to answer that critique. We imagine lots of other studios are eyeing the project’s 17th July 2026 date and awaiting the announcement of its title so they can begin creating portmanteaus in the style of Barbenheimer or Glicked for their own projects.

We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
