Barbarian director Zach Cregger is set to team up with Sony for a remake of the 1985 classic mystery comedy Clue.
Hereās an interesting story that has emerged this morning regarding Zach Cregger, the director who bought us 2022ās Barbarian, a wild horror that became one of that yearās most talked-about films. The success of Barbarian was enough to earn Cregger a handsome deal with New Line Cinema for whom he will be directing his follow-up film, Weapons.
According to reporting at the time, Creggerās budget for Weapons is 'double the size of Barbarian's, while he has reportedly scored a string of other concessions such as “a guaranteed greenlight, a guaranteed theatrical release, a controlling interest in a backend pot and Cregger receiving final cut pending a threshold being met during test screenings.ā
Given that itās been dubbed as the Magnolia of horror films, weāre trying not to get carried away with anticipation until Weapons releases in early 2026. Working on a big swing like Weapons doesnāt seem to have diminished Creggerās sense of ambition though, given that the filmmaker is now said ā according to The Insneider ā to be in negotiations with Sony to direct a remake of Clue, the 1985 crime comedy based on the board game known to folks on this side of the Atlantic as Cluedo.
Like the board game, the original film āsaw six guests anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner. After their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.ā

The 1985 film starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren and Eileen Brennan.
Cregger has likely learned a thing or two about working with an ensemble cast, given that heās just finished up working with Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Rooney Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Burke, Austin Abrams and June Diane Raphael on Weapons.
Thatās quite the call sheet and given Creggerās growing pedigree as a horror filmmaker, weāre curious as to the direction this project might take. Can we expect a darker take on the 1985 film or is this a case of a filmmaker aiming to establish early in his career that he can successfully straddle genres?
All will become clear a some point and weāll let you know when it does.
Sony acquired the rights to Clue a few months ago and has moved pretty quickly to get a production up and running. Ryan Reynolds previously had a crack at getting a remake going but as it stands, it looks like Zach Cregger will be given the chance to stamp his mark on a classic title. Weāll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
