The anticipated killer android thriller Companion, from the team behind Barbarian, is out this month. Here’s a trailer:
Let’s not jinx it, but 2025 looks to be off to an absolute banger so far, with January alone being full of wonderful films. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu set the bar high on January 1st; Wolf Man looks great, and Robert Zemeckis has his ambitious drama, Here, out this month. January is also set to end in style with the release of Companion on the 31st.
The film comes from the same team behind 2022’s Barbarian, an incredible movie for those that got to experience it without knowing too much. While that film’s director, Zach Cregger, has been making Weapons (due next year), he and the producing team behind Barbarian also have Companion on the way first.
Directed by Drew Hancock, Companion has been shrouded in some degree of mystery for a while now. It’s a self-contained story written and directed by Hancock in his feature debut. Sophie Thatcher – probably best known as young Juliette Lewis in Yellowjackets – has been cast as the project’s lead. Thatcher also appeared in last year’s Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman and put in yet another fine turn in last year’s Heretic.
Jack Quaid also features prominently in the trailer while Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend also co-star. Thatcher plays an android named Iris who was made to be the girlfriend of Josh (Quaid).
In the trailer, Iris recalls one of her happiest days during a weekend trip to a remote lakeside estate – when something rather gory and violent happens. Much more, we’d imagine, is set to follow. The trailer is a shade over 90 seconds long. We like that the filmmakers are holding plenty back.
Companion is getting an IMAX run in the US and we’re hoping that the same happens here. Here’s the trailer below.
