Composer Michael Giacchino will make his feature directorial debut with a remake of classic horror Them!

Michael Giacchino is best known for providing the epic scores to films like The Incredibles and its sequel, Ratatouille and his Oscar winning score to Up. Yet he previously directed an episode of Star Trek: Short Treks as well as the Marvel special Werewolf By Night for Disney+.

He is now set to make his feature directorial debut with a remake of the 1954 sci fi monster film Them! for Warner Bros.

The original film, directed by Gordon Douglas, saw a colony of irradiated ants discovered in the New Mexico desert. Two young queen ants and their cohorts escape to set up new nests, and battle ensues in the storm drains of Los Angeles.

Giacchino will direct and also likely score the film, and is currently meeting with writers.

He said that “there’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head, for me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age. It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie”.
