Constantine 2 seems no closer to shooting, and that might be due to Keanu Reeves being unhappy with the script.

Constantine 2 is a project that has been talked about for years and years, with occasional updates from director Francis Lawrence or the project’s star Keanu Reeves suggesting that the project is always just around the corner.

However, despite the script reportedly being completed last September, not to mention Lawrence adding earlier this year that “I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel,ā€ it seems like a green light for the project is still some way away.

The latest update comes courtesy of Peter Stormare, who plays Satan in the 2005 film. While speaking to The Direct, Stormare revealed that backing for the latest iteration of the script isn’t universal, and that Reeves especially doesn’t seem to be fully happy with it.

ā€œIt’s a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves], which I know pretty good,ā€ says Stormare, ā€œis not so happy with the scripts […] But to do a sequel, the studios want to have, you know, cars flying in the air. They want to have people doing flip-flops and fighting action scenes […] I think from Keanu, he wants to do a sequel that is very close to the first one.”

Lawrence talked a little about the script – which is by the first film’s screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman – back in February:

“We have a great idea,” he said. “We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things. I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.”

We’re still confident that this one will happen at some point but do justice to the first film, and the source material of course. Let’s hope that the core trio can work out a script that they feel will produce a film that is well worth the two decade wait for a sequel. We’ll bring you more on Constantine 2 as we hear it.
