Nosferatu director Robert Eggers has begun shooting his next film, Werewulf, with a Christmas 2026 release planned.
Update: Right on schedule, director Robert Eggers has begun filming on his next film, Werewulf, with cameras now rolling at Elstree Studios in the UK.
It was said earlier this year that the Nosferatu filmmaker would start production on his period horror this autumn, and it sounds as though everything’s on track for a planned release in December 2026.
Like his previous films, it’s a period piece, this time digging into werewolf myth and legend, again with Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Willem Dafoe among the cast.
Eggers has previously said this is the darkest thing he’s ever written – which is quite a claim, given how many night scenes there were in Nosferatu.

4th July 2025: Robert Eggers recently described the script for Werewulf, his next project to go before cameras, as “the darkest thing I’ve ever written.”
(It was originally announced as Werwulf, and now appears to be known as Werewulf.)
If you’re a fan of Eggers’ work we’ll allow that to sink in for a moment. This is a filmmaker who seems to revel in taboo-busting cinema and is staunchly unafraid of taking audiences into the inkiest of shadows. If Eggers’ take on the legend of the cursed lycanthrope is the darkest thing he’s yet written, we can only imagine what he has in store for us.
Certainly, the myth of the werewolf is one that is ripe with potential tragedy and horror, and while we’ve had plenty of memorable films featuring the monster over the years, Eggers has proven himself to be a master when it comes to violent, dark stories. Given the high bar he’s set for himself, it’s not unreasonable to expect that Werewulf could set a new standard for films featuring the cursed creature.
World Of Reel has spotted that a UK casting call has Werewulf shooting this September at Elstree Studios in the UK. The film is currently slated for Christmas 2026 release and at the time the project was announced in January of this year, was said to be set in 13th Century England with a script whose dialogue is true to the time period. That script has been penned in collaboration with Sjón, who co-wrote The Northman with Eggers.
Beyond Werewulf, Eggers might be taking a turn in a slightly lighter direction given that he has two adaptations lined up, both of which – in previous incarnations – were aimed at children. There’s a sequel to the 1980s dark fantasy tale Labyrinth and a take on A Christmas Carol, Charles Dicken’s classic tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge’s visitation by a series of ghosts.
We’re not sure which one is coming next, but Werewulf is planned to arrive next Christmas and as he did with this year’s Nosferatu (which released on New Year’s Day), Eggers is is set on creating another bleak midwinter for us.
