Hill will chart the fortunes of Formula 1 champion Damon Hill, and will be release by Sky in the UK this year. More here.
2025 looks to be something of a treat if you sit in the overlapping part of a Venn diagram featuring cinema and Formula 1. First up we have F1, Joseph Kosinski’s highly-anticipated follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick set to arrive in June of this year, featuring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris and plenty of practical driving sequences filmed at actual Formula 1 events. Oh, and British racing champion Lewis Hamilton has been a hands-on producer on the project.
In a further treat, fans of British motorsports now have something else to look forward to in the form of Hill, a feature documentary that will chart the life and career of another British F1 wold champion. Damon Hill (pictured).
He’s a second-generation Formula 1 world champion who overcame the pressures of the legacy of his father (Graham Hill) and several setbacks to eventually become the top driver in the sport.
Sky has picked up the exclusive release rights in the UK and Ireland in a deal with Signature Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There’s no word as to whether Sky plans to give the film some kind of theatrical release as it sometimes does with its Sky Exclusives, but given how this summer could see a wave of F1-related interest in racing car stories, we’re hoping this one gets to see the inside of a cinema.
Alex Holmes directs, with the synopsis reading as such: ‘This is a unique family story set against the backdrop of the fastest sport in the world,” says a synopsis of the film. “How Damon Hill defied the odds and overcame tragedy to step out of his father’s shadow and become a racing legend in his own right.’
For those out there that were F1 fans during the mid-1990s, reliving Hill’s legendary rivalry with the great Michael Schumacher will be a thrilling experience, while the sport’s legion of newer fans – attracted by the likes of TV series, Formula 1: Drive To Survive – will have the opportunity to enjoy Hill’s story for the first time.
