Marvel has released the first look at Daredevil: Born Again and it’s a bone-crunchingly good trailer. Some words on it below.
Marvel has made it clear that itās trying to better its TV output. Daredevil: Born Again was one of the shows that required some retooling, but the first trailer tells us it might have worked. The series is now set to launch on Disney+ on 5th March and will consist of nine episodes in total.
Here’s the first trailer for Daredevil: Born Again:
Ouch, just watching that made my joints ache. Charlie Cox returns to reprise his role as the blind superhero Matt Murdock from the Netflix series carrying the superhero’s name. That show ran for a respectable three seasons, but as the rights to the character returned to Marvel, the studio couldn’t get something greenlit fast enough.
Daredevil: Born Again is bringing back most of its principal cast including Vincent DāOnofrio as Wilson Fisk, Jon Bernthal as Punisher and Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson as Murdock’s best buds and law associates.
Hereās a synopsis for the show:
In “Daredevil: Born Again,” Murdock, a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.
Marvel has recently been accused of playing it safe, with even Deadpool & Wolverine catering to existing fans, inserting a tsunami of references and little nods into seemingly every frame. Deadpool & Wolverine was also spectacularly ā if also comically ā violent, but Daredevil: Born Again seems to be taking this to another level.
The new trailer features a lot of punching, kicking and other forms of ass-kickery and at least one broken knee. Anything less would have been a disappointment, as the Netflix series was gloriously brutal in the best of ways.
Just take a look at the iconic hallway fight below:
DC Studios has already announced that itās making more R-rated projects, putting all its faith in the audience’s desire to see violence rather than it be implied. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine would suggest that the family-friendly approach that Marvel has taken previously might not work anymore, and Daredevil: Born Again will likely give them more food for thought in this area.
We probably won’t see Doctor Doom bite anyone’s head off or blood spurting from Bucky Barnes’ neck anytime soon, but if audiences embrace Daredevil: Born Again, could we see Marvel Studios change its whole output? We don’t know, but we’re certainly excited to find out.
Daredevil: Born Again will launch on Disney+ on 5th March. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson are acting as lead directors for the series with Dario Scardapane acting as showrunner.
