Sony reportedly plans to market Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing as a ‘Safdie-like’ crime thriller ahead of its launch later this year.

Darren Aronofsky is one of those filmmakers whose films are a treat to anticipate, just because going in, you never quite know what to prepare yourself for. Could it be a blistering exercise in arthouse surrealism as with mother!, or something more straightforward and sentimental as we saw more recently with 2022’s The Whale?

We do know that his next film is called Caught Stealing and that it will feature lead performances from Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz. Aronofsky, the director of The Wrestler and Black Swan, is renowned for eking career-high performances out of his stars, including Brendan Fraser’s lead turn in The Whale, which saw the actor win an Oscar for his leading turn.

We also know that Caught Stealing is slated for release in August of this year. According to World Of Reel, Sony isn’t looking at the film as an awards magnet like The Whale, which was nominated for two Oscars (and won two) but instead as a ‘a gritty Safdie-like crime thriller’ that has ‘decent’ commercial chances.

Given how offbeat some of Aronofsky’s films can be, the setup for Caught Stealing does sound surprisingly straightforward. The project is based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the script. The story, per the logline, ‘follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, who’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of 1990s New York City.’

No word as to when and where the film will premiere, but following Caught Stealing, the rumours of Aronofsky tackling a take on DC’s Plastic Man have resurfaced. Imagine a world where Luca Guadagnino is making a Sgt Rock movie while Aronofsky tackles Plastic Man? It would be an unexpected turn to see established auteurs lining up to pad out DC’s stable of comic book movies, but we suppose that it could make for some original spins on these characters, at least.

Would you like to see Aronofsky tackle Plastic Man next or carry on outside of the world of comic books? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
