In a long-time passion project for the Oyelowo, he’ll star in – also write and produce – a film about one of boxing’s most legendary figures.
British actor – and one time Film Stories magazine cover star! – David Oyelowo is set to play American boxing legend, Sugar Ray Robinson in an upcoming biopic entitled Sweet Thunder. What’s more, Oyelowo has been the driving force behind getting the project made, spending ten years getting the film off the ground and maintaining the incredible level of fitness needed to portray the lightning-quick athlete.
Oyelowo has cited Robert De Niro in Raging Bull as an inspiration in that regard, but the actor doesn’t seem wanting for simulation, given that the film is a passion project that he’s been pursuing for a decade. In fact, Oyelowo is so involved with the film that he’s also producing it and is currently writing it too.
Oyelowo is currently slated to star in the 1950s London-based murder mystery, See How They Run alongside Saoirse Ronan and Ruth Wilson. When the actor commits to a role in the manner in which he seems to be approaching Sweet Thunder, audiences are usually in for a treat. The actor’s turn as Dr Martin Luther King (which he had spent years and years working to make happen) in 2015’s Selma remains to this day to be an extraordinary turn, one which reportedly even had Steven Spielberg asking Oweyolo if he’d consider reprising the role again when the legendary filmmaker finally gets around to his own long-mooted version of the King story.
We’ll bring you more on Sweet Thunder as we hear it with the film certainly promising to be a project to watch.
