Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have released the final trailer (we think?) for the latest entry in the Despicable Me series, Despicable Me 4, premiering in July.

With the release of The Fall Guy last week, summer blockbuster season has officially arrived, which means lots of eyes are looking at the year’s biggest and splashiest projects and watching how they perform commercially. One such set of eyes will be those of Universal Pictures, who will be keen to retain its crown as the studio that grossed the most money last year and as such, the performance of its biggest movies will play a key role.

Whilst the jury is still out on whether The Fall Guy will be numbered among its successes, hopes will be high that Despicable Me 4 – set to release in July – will be a strong addition to Universal’s balance sheet. After all, 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru sparked something of a cultural phenomenon on the way to earning almost $1bn worldwide. We’ve already seen a previously-released TV spot do a great job of satirising the rise of generative AI so we’re keen to see what else the film has in its sights.

Here’s the synopsis for the latest movie in the series:

Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1B worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo, Edith and Agnes — welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting his dad. They face a new nemesis with Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, as they’re forced to go on the run.

The voice cast also includes returning stars Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Madison Polan, with new characters voiced by Joey King, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman and Steve Coogan. Pierre Coffin voices the Minions. Franchise stalwart Chris Renaud co-directs with Patrick Delage, from a screenplay by School Of Rock (and The White Lotus) scribe Mike White and returning writer Ken Daurio.

Here’s that trailer below…

Despicable Me 4 is out in UK cinemas on the 12th July.
