A new report suggests that Ryan Gosling is about to star in Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film.

Is Ryan Gosling going backwards through the early phase of Harrison Ford’s career? The latest bit of gossip to float out of Hollywood suggests he might be. Gosling is reportedly in talks to appear in a currently untitled Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy.

Levy was, of course, the director of last year’s hit, Deadpool & Wolverine, making him something of a safe pair of hands when it comes to making expensive films with big franchise stakes attached.

Last year, the filmmaker recalled a conversation he had with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy. Levy said: “When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to make a Star Wars movie, her central mandate to me was ‘I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies – with a Star Wars story.'”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first published the Ryan Gosling story, Levy and screenwriter Jonathan Tropper (with whom he collaborated on This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project) have been writing the script for the past year, and developing ideas since Levy was first attached in 2022.

At this stage, there’s no detail on what the film will be about or what role Gosling will play, though it’s thought to be a ‘standalone’ entry rather than a numbered sequel, much like James Mangold’s in-the-works Star Wars project.

As for Gosling, he’s already followed in Harrison Ford’s footsteps with Blade Runner 2049 (Ford starred in the 1982 original as well as that 2017 sequel). If Gosling makes a Star Wars film, as Ford did in 1977, we should expect the Barbie star to make an Apocalypse Now sequel after that. Then quit directing and take up carpentry.
