Finished for years and seemingly in limbo, the new Toxic Avenger finally has a distributor: Cineverse, the company behind the Terrifier films.
It seems that at long last, the saga of Toxic Avenger may be coming to an end, and a happy one at that. Macon Blair ā who made his directorial debut with the terrific, offbeat Netflix thriller I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore in 2017 ā followed up that project with a take on Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage.
If youāve never caught the 1984 Troma movie, it centres around a janitor whoās accidentally exposed to toxic waste, gaining new powers in the process. If it sounds like B-movie oddness, thatās exactly what it was, although Blairās take was reportedly very violent ā so violent that it struggled to find a US distributor in 2023. We got a brief teaser for the film, and since then, nothing.
According to World Of Reel, however, thatās all set to change. Enter Cineverse, the company behind the Terrifier films. If thereās anybody out there who know how to market an ultra-violent, offbeat B-movie to a niche audience and make lots of money doing so, itās Cineverse. Apparently, the distributor is set to skip the MPAA board ā much as it did with Terrifier 3 ā and release it as an unrated film.

While that might make traditional studios blanch, itās something of a speciality area for Cineverse, whose CEO, Chris McGurk, explained the distributorās alternative methods last year on an episode of The Town podcast. That means we may well see Toxic Avenger arrive in 2025, perhaps with a UK release. Itāll mark the end of a saga that has stretched on for almost half a decade.
In the meantime, if you want to read about the strange story of 1980s toxic waste movies, as always, we have something for you right here. Weāll leave you with the synopsis for Toxic Avenger below.
