Creed spin-off project, Drago, has a writer, studio backing and most importantly, a Dolph Lundgren returning as Ivan Drago.
It’s been around six months since we heard anything regarding the plans to set up a Drago movie at MGM. The film would presumably spin-off from the Russian warrior’s appearance in Creed II, itself a spin-off from the legendary series of Rocky films.
None other than Ivan Drago himself, Dolph Lundgren teased the project at the turn of the year, stating, “I think there’s some talk about doing a whole spin off on Drago with MGM. So you may get more of that.” Whilst nothing has been officially announced, The Wrap is reporting that the project is definitely happening. What’s more, it even has a writer attached.
Robert Lawton, the writer of the upcoming documentary, Becoming Rocky, impressed MGM with his pitch for a Drago spin-off so much that the studio have put the project into active development. One star of the series who you can almost guarantee won’t be featuring though, is Rocky Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone. The actor recently took to social media to launch a vicious verbal attack on the franchise’s producers, calling them out for blocking him from owning any of the rights to a series he was instrumental in building.
Still, with 2018’s Creed II doing a sterling job of reintroducing a more human version of the Drago character, there’s plenty of story to mine, even without the presence of Balboa, Drago’s ultimate nemesis. In related news, Creed III, which is being directed by its star, Michael B Jordan, has been delayed by four months from November of this year to March, 2023. We’re keen to see how all of this plays out and will definitely let you know as we hear more.
